Well, there is no such thing, and bullet-resistant glass is a better term...

What I could not figure out from my googling is what is a better bullet-resistant material, plain (not laminated) glass or (cheap) steel at the same thickness?
Also, what about bullet-resistant laminated glass or specially formulated hard steel plate (armor plate) of the same thickness?
I would pick the steel in each case, but is that the right answer...

well the steel of equal thickness will obviously be stronger but it fails the transparency test and would make a pretty crappy window.

HD cameras and monitors. Who really needs a window?

Aluminium Oxynitride (ALON). Scotty's Transparent Aluminum is reality.

Of course, he gave us the formula in 1986!

Lexan is used in pllace of glass in armoured vehicles, banks, jails, etc. I've shot it with 357s and deer slugs and they didn't begin to affect it. 50cal might go through.

50 cal with WC PCB drill bits crammed into the back of the projectile ain't afraid of a heck of a lot.
Energy absorption is key. Rigid is going the wrong direction. 6" thick sapphire will pop from a .22 hit.

Size of projectile is only important if you can't get enough muzzle velocity, but .50 cal rounds are large, move pretty damn fast and come in several armor-piercing varieties.
OTOH, my cousins in Montana hunt deer and elk with .17 rifles.
