Legal LSDs

At the last event, I spoke to someone who said he wanted to run in a stock class, but couldn't because his car had a mechanical LSD, even though it was factory installed. He said the only type of legal LSD was the type employed most often in AWD applications (I don't remember specifically which one). According to him, nothing else, even if it came stock on the car, is legal in the stock classes.

This seems contrary to the rules, as I read them: "Except for modifications authorized below, Stock Category cars must be run as specified by the factory with only standard equipment as defined by these Rules. This requirement refers not just to individual parts, but to combinations thereof which would have been ordered together on a specific car."
and
"13.10 L. Limited-slip differential, transmission and differential ratios, clutch mechanisms and carburetion, fuel injection or supercharger induction systems must be standard as herein defined."

Is this the case? I'm thinking of buying a Mini Cooper S which comes with an optional factory installed LSD for $500. Would this car be legal for G Stock, or would I have to move up in class?

Yes, the car is legal for stock class. Whoever told you otherwise doesn't know what the heck they're talking about.

Said idiot might be confusing the STS rule which doesn't allow even factory limited slips unless they are that weakass worthless viscous types like early SE-R's have (think Craig and Renee's car).

Factory standard and factory optional lsd's are legal in stock. The one caveat here is that lets say the factory only installed LSD's in sunroof cars. You'd better have a sunroof car. This relates to adding one later, which is legal if its the factory part installed per factory instructions/specs. That's legal too, as long as you car could have come that way from the factory and has the matching options. No mixing and matching like SP classes.

Mini needs the LSD in GS.

That actually sounds like what he was saying.

Would you pay to find out? }:)

Actually, I fit with a lot of room to spare. Apparently they're made to comfortably accommodate people 6'8"+. I test drove one and it actually felt airier than the G35. Wouldn't want to be shoehorned into the back seat with my seat all the way back, though.

No, Seb...not THAT kind of LSD! Although that goes along nicely with the "something interesting" I was apparently smoking when I watched Fargo.

They're just different applications of Hoffman. One found it and the other made the most of it.
