Ok, absolute novice here. This weekend's SCNAX competition will be my first ever. I'm a little confused about when I should actually get to Fontana and the wife wants to know how long I'll be gone. I'm entered in a Lotus SC which is classified in ASP. On my registration, I'm entered in PAX Novice and, for X runs, ASP. According to the schedule, regular ASP is in run group 3 in the morning and there is a required novice briefing in the morning as well. PAX runs in the afternoon. Do I need to make a day of it? When would I be doing my X runs?

Any and all info. is appreciated.

It's designed so you can do it in 1/2 a day. There is also a Novice walk during the lunch break. You take your regular runs in Group 4, work in Group 5 and take your X-Runs in Group 6. X-Runs can be taken anytime after your regular class, not with the base class (ASP in your case). I'd recommend getting there between 11:00 and 11:30.

Note: If the turnout is low and the afternoon groups get combined into 2 groups, there may not be any X-Runs.

If turn out is low ... is there a possibility of doing Four Runs ?

I have been to at least 2 events where the afternoon run groups were combined down from 3 to 2, and I was still able to get my x-runs by doing them at the same time as my regular runs and using the "2 driver" lane.
BTW, seems like the region may want to allow this to get more income as it is (almost) like having one more competitor, and it does not reduce the number of workers, just makes the run group a little bigger/longer.
Anyway, does not matter to me for this event as I can not make it.

Hi John,

Looking at the registration list you are signed up for NOVASP. This means that you should run at the same time as the ASP class runs which is Run in the 3rd run group and work in the 1st run goup.

I think the confusion is being generated from the fact that we ask what PAX class you are running and at the same time we have a PAX class. For your case you have signed up for Novice (NOV) which is a class where after everyone is done running we multiply your time by a "correction factor"(a PAX) and base your results on the resulting number and therefore is refered to as a PAXed class. With the NOV class you run at the same time as your index class (ASP for you). The PAX class is an entirely different beast that is handled pretty much the same as NOV but they run all in one group and it is loaded with National Champs and National Champ contenders (So that might not be the best place for you to run for your first event ;) )

As for your X runs, you cannot run your X runs before your regular class runs so therefore you would either need to run both your Class runs and you X runs in the 3rd group (in which case you would need to use the 2 driver lane, ask the grid person and explain that you want to run both entries in the same group, they will make sure that you are run twice as often as a single driver car since you have twice as many runs to complete in one run group) Or you can wait and run your X-runs anytime in the afternoon. If Sunday ends up being pretty hot then I would suggest the second option so that you don't end up roasting your tires.

Yep, makes sense to me. I didn't look at how he actually registered.

Cool, now that we are all on the same page, here are a couple more tidbits for you:

1. I think you are registered in the correct class
2. Make sure that when you run you class runs you car has NOVASP on the side of it in addition to your number
3. For you X runs make sure the car says XASP in addition to your number (class letters are avalible at Tech or you can print them out on your own, just make sure they are readable from a distance)
4. Get there early to walk course and make sure to take advantage of the novice course walk
5. While working course pay attention to the cars because you can learn a lot about the course from just watching
6. Request an instructor who can help you during your runs
7. Have Fun!

Another alternative, since you run in the morning:

- novice course walk morning
- work
- do your regular runs w/ an instructor run in the morning (maybe plus xruns)
- do the nov walk (or walk alone, or w/ an instructor, etc) again @ lunch
- this time it should look a lil different to you since you just ran it & you can analyze stuff you did & should have done
- do your x-runs 1st group after lunch w/ your new strategy you got from lunch walk

Remember, you can always do more than 1 set of xruns if you are feeling frisky & are able to stay stay away from the house a little longer.
