Dunlop Direzza Sport Z1 Star Spec v.s. Toyo Tire Proxes R1R

Both come in the sizes I am looking for.

Front: 195/55-15 on 6JX15

Rear: 225/50-16 on 7JX16

Stats: Say about 1900-2000lb car, 190-200hp

I was just about to buy a set of Dunlop tires, because they would see some street use and because I have read they take heat well. But lately all I see is posts mentioning Toyo tires and no mention of Dunlop anymore. Are the days of the Star Spec dead? Star Specs are priced slightly lower than R1Rs. Are there more pros than cons to change the purchase to Toyo? I am just looking to make local/regional appearances.

This time of the year the Toyo's might have the edge in cool or wet weather. We've run both on our Miata and loved them. The Dunlops might be a bit more "friendly" at the limit. We both liked them over the Bridgestone RE-11's. When the Toyo's need to be replaced the Dunlop might be the way to go when it's warmer.

Weird that people forget to say what type of car they'll use them on? FWD vs RWD, etc.

From the specs he listed, sounds to me like a Lotus Elise?

In the 195/50/15 Toyo R1R, we have a little over 110 runs on one set of tires, they have around 1 - 2/32nds left, 30% - 40% of the tires life have been on concrete or concrete like surfaces. Comparing that to our other set of 195/50/15 Toyo R1R which has 70-80 run tires, I can't tell the difference between the two, neither can Nicole. Even when they only had 40 runs, we couldn't tell. These tires are fitted onto a 15x7.5" rim. When we previously had the 225/45/15 Toyo R1R on the same 15x7.5" rim, we could tell a difference between 30 runs, 60 runs and 100 run tires. Our thoughts are the Toyo's are so big and have a soft sidewall, they probably need a wider width rim to support the lower tire pressures that we run.

What size rim do you plan on using for your tires?

Were they shaved or full tread? Just curious.

If it's an Elise ... Track Pack, ie. stiffer shocks/springs? Upgraded front bar?

full tread, they start at 8/32"

On the Miata on 15x7.5 the available Dunlop size is a taller tire than the Toyo's... hence the Toyo's in ST and STS classes.

In my personal opinion the Dunlops kept pace with the Toyo's with longer lifespans on course, but lost the race on the start getting that taller tire off of the line. If your comparing same sized tires on your drive line axle... I think the tests that Sports car ran show Dunlops to be the better tire (both grip and lifespan).

But now the Hankook may very well be a new dog in the fight!

Ok same type of question. I will be auto crossing our 02 Mustang GT. What is the best bang for the $ tire. W/ mod it's about 310 HP, rear wheel drive. Running currently on 245/45/17 on 8" rims. Looking for a set of stagger 18" mustang rims. been looking at Dunlop Direzza Sport Z1 Star Spec. If we stay with 17' rims looking at 255. If i'm hijaking this link let me know and I'll try to move it. If admin wants to move Ok, I'm not sure I know how.

Hi Ozzie,

Looks like a cool car for STU! Dunlops would be a good choice for a heavy car like your Mustang.

I would look for 18" wheels that allow you to run a 275 or 265 square set-up. Staggered wheels and tires won't provide enough front grip. 255s won't put power down as well as 275s. You could also go with the taller 275/40-17s on 9-10" wide wheels all around, to save some $. I would love to see a well set-up GT for STU.

For the Rustang, I'd think the 275's on a 17" rim would probably put power down better than the 18" option. If I remember right when Dave Schotz won ESP he had a narrower tire but taller sidewall than his competitors.

17X10 front with a 275. 16X10 rear with 265.

However, Madarash, who has won the last few years is on 18"s. :unimpressed:

For STU you will need ever mm you can get. 18X10 with 285s would be a good start.

Reviving a month old thread. I heard from a reliable source that Dunlop will be releasing some new sizes soon. Finally a 205/50-15 and 195/50-15 Z1 Star Spec for ST/STS. ;)

Jon can talk all he wants but we all know he will be running the Toyo R1Rs for the San Diego National Tour because it is the fastest. Just keep your eye on his tire selection and you will see.
