Sad news ... Big Dog Glenn

Post by Jim Rohn »

Glenn “Big Dog” Duensing from Monrovia, CA died this morning (Monday, January 18, 2010). Many of us know him from his generosity in the Solo side of SCCA. He had started in SCCA by attending a Pro Solo at Lion Country Safari in Irvine, CA. in the spring of 1985. I met him there as a fellow F Stock Camaro driver and then again shortly after in Las Vegas of that year at another Pro Solo. Glenn became my “Richard Childress” and I enjoyed success co-driving his blue 85 IROC Camaro then later his 91 Z28 Camaro:

The above picture is from the 1996 SCCA Solo II National Championship in Topeka, Kansas.

We covered thousands of miles in his blue Camaros going to National events in California, Arizona, Utah, Colorado and Kansas. I found on one trip to Wendover the the cruise control WILL resume at 125 (ish, not sure, maybe higher) on that lonely stretch in Nevada. :-) I won countless trophies in that car from Divisionals, National Tours, Pro Solo events (2nd overall in the Challenge too) and Nationals. He also helped out with the success of Belinda Endress and Lynn Rothney Kozlak by being their “Richard Childress” as well. I do not know all of the people he has assisted over the years but he has made his mark with many of us.

Glenn gave back to the club by taking on a number of National worker positions, from National Solo Safety Steward to Regional responsibilities to local Cal Club posts. He was always one to lend a hand or a bit of assurance to anyone. We will miss him.

This is very sad. While many of us saw him as the ultimate Pot Stirrer, I always found him friendly and as Jim pointed out was there for many of us and provided a worthy vehicle to several. He will be missed.

I'm floored. I don't know what to say, but RIP is a start.

Glenn certainly has been known as a pot stirrer, and he was pretty good at arguing for the sake of argument... but he had contacted me personally about some hurt feelings nearly a year ago and he seemed to take the discussion to heart. His posts since then generally have been constructive and focused, and only a couple months ago I know he was planning to roll back out and join us again.

Whether you agreed or disagreed with his position, you had to respect all his efforts for the cause. Glenn, I'm glad I had the chance to meet you.

I am having a tough time with this, as the one & only time I went to Nationals was when I drove Glenn's car. It was a challenge and I was actually the tire warmer for Belinda, but we had good time.

No matter what Glenn said on the message board, deep down he was a kind & gentle person who would do just about anything for you. Before we bought the Neon, I was co-driving with Art in the Nissan and Craig was co-driving Glenn's blue camaro (and usually beating poor Glenn).

RIP Glenn and say Hi to Craig for me.

I'm sad to hear this. I learned a good deal from Glenn about being a Solo Safety Steward.

Shauna and I both send our condolences.

Glenn cared. A lot. Sometimes maybe too much, but he cared. That's what we have to remember.

RIP Glenn. See you on the better side...

Wow. You just never know when it's your time.

I enjoyed his "pot stirring", as on many occasions it was needed, even if not appreciated. Sometimes you need someone to be the antagonist / devil's advocate. He also provided me many tips during my years as a Safety Steward too.

I'll miss Glenn.

Wow... very sad to hear this. My thoughts and prayers go out to all his family and friends.

My first serious auto-x ride was in F-Stock somewhere about 1989, and Glen was one of the first people to help this newbie.

Thanks, Glenn... there are no downed cones in heaven.

Rest in Peace Glenn, the Solo community lost part of its soul today. Glenn was always a friend and helped me many times. He had joined SCNAX this year and was planning on attending many events, he will be missed.

I don't think so. We have a shark and a certain Civic driver who appear willing to step in...

I am very sad. I met Glen in 1993 when he acted as the divisional Safety Steward at a divisional Solo event on the road course at the in the Las Vegas Speedway where I was a very novice course designer. Ever since than we would meet at different events, we shared meals and talk and we would meet when he visited Las Vegas. We kept in touch throughout the years by emails and a little bit on Facebook. I truly liked the man and I will miss him, I am glad I knew him.

No way...Glen and " ol' Blue" were a staple of CSCC/SCCA. I appreciated the effort he put toward his pot stirring and volunteer work.

this is one of his favorite pictures of "Blue"

it was at Nationals in KS

I was the pilot and my picture of this picture does not do it justice, fantastic bite and a perfect line ... :-)
