I rarely get time to watch movies these days, but today I got a chance to watch "L.A. Confidential" for probably the fourth time since it's release in 1997. I ranks up there as one of the greatest crime dramas ever made.

Some months ago, a few of us where hanging around the lot talking about movies we thought were so good we could watch them over and over again. Tom Tanquery mentioned a few that I promptly forgot, but they sounded great at the time. I thought it might be fun to start a thread about our favorite movies so that on those nights like tonight where a movie just seemed like a good idea, we could take a look at some of the movies our friends find special. Probably best to be brief with the description as anyone interested can google the name and read all about it.

I'm going to start if off with the movie I watched tonight, a great crime drama set in Los Angeles circa 1950.

First rate acting; filmed on location in the Los Angeles area.

I offer not a crime drama but a crime saga (3hrs)! It's like an opera about LA. Featuring 2 heavyweight championship actors. Shows LA in a different light and I can watch this movie over and over again. I have it on VHS and DVD (both director's cut):

HEAT (1995) starring Al Pacino vs. Robert DeNiro. First movie that they share the screen with dialogue together (The Godfather Part II, I believe doesn't count)
All filmed in LA and I've been to many of the location scenes. Directed by Michael Mann.

OK, I like old Jackie Chan movies. He's real and so are the stunts.

"Drunken Master I" (1979) is arguably his best. Funny, clever, and action packed.




Like, you thought I'd suggest "Citizen Kane?"

About 25 years ago I was watching a movie channel late on a Friday night after a couple of beers and was transported to "everyman's" fantasy by a movie called Summer Lovers.

"A young American couple go to the Greek islands for the summer and are dazzled by the beauty and the uninhibited people surrounding them... "

Starring: Valérie Quennessen, Daryl Hannah and some guy!!

Fell totally in lust for Valerie!! But before I could divorce wife #2 and move to Paris to search out this object of my desires, I found out that in 1989, she had died in a fatal automobile accident.

Not a great movie, but if after you have watched it, you can find fault with the acting you were not watching the more important PARTS!!!

L.A. Confidential has got to be one of my favorite period crime dramas! That era of Los Angeles and the LAPD has always fascinated me.

And I'm a total sucker for Michael Mann films although I haven't seen Public Enemies yet. But Heat and Collateral are up there among favorites, I love films that depict Los Angeles in an honest way that is true to the story, not to mention Michael Mann's choice to employ Mick Gould to choreograph his intense/realistic gun fights make them that much better.

Yes it was great...a total sleeper hit. Highly recommend it to those who have netflix. Also do see "The Hurt Locker" it's nominated for best picture this year. Talk about intense!
