Driving to Events on V710's......

What's your opinion about driving to events, in dry conditions, on V710's, relative to wear, heating, whatever? Let's use 50 miles one way as the baseline. 95% freeway.

I have driven hundreds of miles on 710s with no issues. Every year for the SD tour I have driven the 60+ miles each way (both days), and there was not enough wear to clean the SD tire turds off. Do it.

I do it on the Noble, from San Diego to El Toro or Fontana. No problems.

200 mi r/t to fontana no problemmo.
but
You do stand a chance of running over road trash & damaging the tire beyond repair. I did that once in 7 years to a new 315, about $350. They "are much easier to damage than a deep tread street tire.
You have been advised.

Carry a tire repair kit because tire stores/garages will not fix a racing tire ... for liability reasons.

What about commute use during the summer months? I have a set of mounted practice V710s sitting in my garage.

If you don't have a straight alignment they'll cup fast.
They track the road grooves like nobody's business, it's exciting on out crappy freeways getting yanked over a lane.
If the tires stick out of you fender wells, they will pick up every pebble and blast your paint with it.

Are these as soft as the Hoosier A6?
So... since these are DOT approved does that mean that are legal to run on the road?
What's the minimum allowed tread in California?

From the California Vehicle Code online:
(1) One thirty-second (1/32) of an inch tread depth in any two adjacent grooves at any location of the tire, except as provided in paragraphs (2) and (3).
(2) Four thirty-second (4/32) of an inch tread depth at all points in all major grooves on a tire on the steering axle of any motor vehicle specified in Section 34500, and two thirty-second (2/32) of an inch tread depth at all points in all major grooves on all other tires on the axles of these vehicles.
(3) Six thirty-second (6/32) of an inch tread depth at all points in all major grooves on snow tires used in lieu of tire traction devices in posted tire traction device control areas.

So I guess that means 4/32 of an inch tread depth for a tire that only has two grooves
EDIT: According to the specs the tread depth on a new V710 is 4/32 - so it's possible to be road legal as long as the tires are new...

34500 applies to Trucks, truck tractors, buses, yada yada
So you are good down to 1/32.
Try convincing John Law of that on the side of the road when he tells you "Them thar are racin slicks, ain't they"

I would assume that there is a DOT sticker somewhere on them, right?

Has anyone driven on the FWY on Hoosier A6 tires?
You might want to contact Mr. Abbott. He drives to Fontana and El Toro on them. 50-60 miles each way.

Yes, I drive on A6's to every event. I get 60 laps and 5 drives to the events. 140 miles round trip.

So Steve, do you think it reduces the life by a lot?
Do you know how many laps you would get if you were just using them only at the events?
I'm asking because it seems to me that smooth driving at the freeway shouldn't be very bad for the tires...

A6s or 710's are fine on the street/freeway. Just be extra cautious about puddles or anything sharp that could damage them.
Street driving warms them up more than not street driving, but probably not enough to constitute a traditional "heat cycle".
As long as your toe settings are reasonable street wear should be minimal.
Plenty of Viper guys use A6s as their only tires and report 10k+ street miles of life.

I put 16,000 miles on a set of Hoosier wets without any problems, if I had spent time rotating them I'm sure I would have managed 20K+

I think the life of the tire is about the same. You wouldn't want to go more then 60 laps anyway. To slow by then. My toe is not very straight either.

Depends also on whether you're concerned with wearing out the rubber, or losing grip. Many people consider the life of a race tire to be in number of heat cycles, not miles. I certainly wouldn't expose new race rubber to highway miles. Once they've lost the "new tire edge" maybe not so important.
