Suggestions for an ECU tune for our "STR" NB Miata

We put on exhaust and intake mods but never had a ECU tune for our '99 NB Miata. We're using an open 49 State exhaust manifold so the car will never be SCCA legal, but Karen will be doing some track days with it.

Can anyone suggest who/where to have this done, and how much to expect to pay

STR allows exhaust manifold modification and/or replacement. Why wouldn't it be SCCA legal?

Even if we started with the CA NB that has that extra CAT in the exhaust manifold ?

Sure, as long as your replacement has a cat in the same location. }:)

Hey Mako,

Check with PPE Engineering. They've done 3 or 4 "pre-cat" headers for the NC Miatas, so they might be able to gin some up. Might be $$$$$ though.

Great photo (and print quality) from last event...thx!

I don't know of any "CA" cars running at the natl level... Even when there were ones from CA. A 49 state conversion is legal, just needs to be done 100%.

Hi Mako, so you mean to re-tune the stock ECU (not sure if that can be done on NBs) or you have a stand alone ECU?

I would suggest Sean Church from Church automotive close to long beach.

Another vote for Sean. I think Uyeda was the first of we AXers to go there and now there are sooo many. He's really getting a (great) national reputation. I don't think you can do a reflash on an NB, but what do I know - if it's stand alone, no matter the brand, he can probably do it.

OK, so NB's require a piggyback ecu ... what do folks/Sean Church use? Costs?

Not looking for max performance ... just doesn't seem like we're really taking advantage of the intake/exhaust that we went to.

RacingBeat Intake, RB header > RB extension kit > Flying Miata Hi-Flo CAT/Resonator > SuperTrapp muffler

Sean doesn't use anything: he tunes whatever you bring him. I know g\he's adept w/AEMs, he knew how to use my Electromotive, and he knows how to use my Hydra - my guess is familiar with just about everything.

Costs? Don't know - that all depends on what he/you need to do. Call him! (310) 518-49six six

We have had him tune Mega Squirt and COBB units, and I know he can also do Greddy.

OK ... but is the consensus that one can't do anything with the stock NB ('99) ecu ?

NA/NB ECU's are tuneable, but it requires removing the stock chip and instaling an EEPROM and socket in it's place.

There are a few people that have cracked them. I know the Denso ECU quite well, but I no longer have access to a PROM writer.
