Two of my brother have Rovers, the love them for sentimental reasons but complains constantly about maintaining it.

I dated a girl who's father had one. He insisted I drive it anytime I took her out, as he didn't think my Mk1 Escort was safe. I drove another one to the South of France and back. I love the things and the TG episode reminded me of that.

I would really love one, but in truth, it's not reliable enough to replace the GTO for my 80 mile a day commute. My trouble is that both the GTO and MX5 are useless for carrying anything. I would like the ability to carry 8 wheels and tires in one vehicle. However, I'm not into trucks or most SUVs. I would like a Subaru Legacy GT Wagon 5 speed, but they are extremely rare and those that exist are getting to have 100,000 miles on them.

Also, I'm not quite sure I can bring myself to sell the GTO. It's so reliable and fun to drive. I just wish it came in wagon form!

I remember living near the "Gold Coast" (the southern tip of Connecticut facing the Long Island Sound) during the Boom Boom 80's. The multimillionaire Greenwich types were all driving these. Englishmen that would come to visit would always marvel at out American stupidity: "Don' you people realize what terrible cars these are?!"

I remember seeing 2-3 yr. old Land Rovers already starting to rust...

I have a friend that bought one a couple of years ago for " a really good price". He now has 4 of them.

Something about that its cheaper to buy another one than to have them fix.

Here a pic of one of my brothers rover and mini, he is obsessed with british cars. The funny thing is that the rover is very reliable in Africa, it's one of the few cars that can trully go from paved road to mud/river without blinking an eye.

Imagine how bad the first Range Rovers from the mid-70s were like. It was still British Leyland back then.

Like everyone else has said, if you're pining for an older SUV with a leather interior, get a Land Cruiser. The pre-V8s came with a bullet-proof inline-6.

You know your cars Mostly the Defender but lot's of Land Rovers too, and Toyota Land Cruiser.

An FJ45 would be great to have. The body-off resto's aren't cheap. There's a place in the Valley that does them, reputation used to be questionable, and Cool Cruisers of Texas, reputation was good back when I was interested.

If get an older one that still has drum brakes all the way around you'll want to convert to front discs. Unless you like your panic stops extra, extra panicky.

The Defender 90/110 were the last models built so they could be parachute dropped in two crates and assembled on site.

I second this.

We had a tow truck driver deliver a car, and as we were talking he mentioned if it wasn't for Land Rover he'd be out of business. Second most towed car for him were BMW's.

They are useless in the snow. During the winter we see them on the weekends, but very rarely during the week. The locals I know would not touch one.

The center of gravity, the wide tires and ice make them prone to trouble. A Honda Element will swallow at least 8 tires.

Most of the SUV's sold today aren't packaged for snow. 20-inch, allow rims with low-profile "all-season" tires.
