Cal Club Autocross Forums

At our previous committee meeting, we all agreed that, at minimum, the course designers should provide maps to the chief of workers and one for the side of the CTV.

However, if possible, I'd like to ask that course designers provide a few more copies for the novice coordinators, Leonard and me (where's the batting eyelashes emoticon? )

It makes it a lot easier to explain certain sections to novices with maps.

Art, I think Lily wants the map prior to the event. I gave one to the worker chief, wasn't aware that the novice coordinators are supposed to get one too.

Thanks Art and Theo, yea I meant a map before the event.

Course designers aren't obligated to give us one but I was just saying it'd be nice to have one so we can break it down by sections instead of saying "that u-turn leading into first slalom" and we get this face:

Maybe at El Toro we could get one of the model airplane people to put a camera on a plane and take a picture when the course is done then just print them out.

I've got a 45"-span electric T-28 Trojan that's an excellent camera platform. Should I bring it to the next practice?

Also, I've got a question about course maps available during the event. Having a copy of a somewhat-to-scale map before running would be a huge help in visualizing the line, etc. I know the map is posted on the motorhome, but can copies be made available to participants? And is it okay to make maps/notes as we're walking the course?

You can't capture an image with that plane, it will be moving too fast

Cool, but does the camera have enough of a time delay for the chopper to get to altitude?

EDIT: Never mind, it's just video, have to do a screen cap from it.

Doug, there's an app for that ;).

Actually, several ppl draw out the map while they walk and/or take notes, so it's a-okay.

Well, I forgot about the Multiplex EZ Star I have...the thing's basically a kite (pusher-prop motor glider) and'll slow down to walking speed. But the T-28's far more fun!!

As usual, somewhat off topic, but here are the first results of an experiment ... doing a GoPro Time Lapse as we walked the Divisional Course on Saturday late afternoon. 2 Frames Per Second. Nick Bjoin then tweaked it so that the time equaled a lap time. It's quite wiggly. Next he's going to see if he can run it through some video stabilization software to smooth it out.

I did my first time lapse course walk about 10 years ago. There was some discussion about the legality of it, or of any video device on a course walk. Not sure what has changed, but we were told it was not legal for championship events. But maybe it is?

Good point ... yeah, what is the rule ?

It took a few weeks before we got to see our time lapse in it's final form. Just taking cell phone snap shots could be a help in remembering key sections. But I do believe the rules say that negotiating the course is not suppose to be a test of memory ... something like that. Drawing a course map with notes is probably more of an aid then snap shots

As far as I know it's not illegal to look at someone else's in car video that ran before you, so why would carrying a video camera on a walk be illegal?

In today's electronic age, things like this would be so hard to enforce it wouldn't make sense to have a rule against it.

The app part was more of a joke. The one a buddy of mine tried (used your gps location to make a cookie crumb trail for walking/hiking) didn't work out so well - when he finished walking course, it barely looked like a course map.

Potentially, I would think you can use something like max-q-data while walking should produce better results, though taking a picture of the map on the motorhome w/ your cell phone should produce something just as usable.
