It happened at the Arco AM-PM station at Portola and Saddleback Parkway in Lake Forest.

FOX 11's Orange County Bureau Chief Al Naipo talked to the customer and the store's manager to figure out just what happened.

Story Script:

GEORGE MACK, CUSTOMER
IT'S LUDICROUS. THERE'S NO WAY I COULD PUMP 3,700 GALLONS OF GAS!

THAT'S NOT WHAT GEORGE MACK'S RECEIPT SAYS.

THE MISSION VIEJO MAN STOPPED TO FILL UP AT THE ARCO SUNDAY NIGHT.

HE PUMPED ABOUT 13 1/2 GALLONS OF PREMIUM UNLEADED -- AT $4.05 A GALLON. THE PUMP CORRECTLY INDICATED $54.70.

GEORGE EVEN TOOK A PICTURE WITH HIS CELLPHONE.

BUT HIS RECEIPT SHOWED JUST UNDER THREE GRAND DEBITED FROM HIS BANK ACCOUNT, LEAVING HIM $1,300 IN THE HOLE.

GEORGE MACK, CUSTOMER
THEY DIDN'T KNOW WHAT TO DO, THEY WERE CONFUSED AND HAD NO SOLUTIONS FOR ME.

IN FACT, THEY GENERATED A SECOND RECEIPT WITH THE SAME NUMBER OF GALLONS. IT TOTALED EXACTLY TWO THOUSAND DOLLARS LESS... A LITTLE BETTER, BUT STILL INCORRECT!

GEORGE MACK, CUSTOMER
IT CERTAINLY SCARED ME.

WITH RECEIPTS IN HAND, WE SPOKE WITH THE MANAGER.

DAVE GOYAL, MANAGER
YES, IT WAS ONE TRANSACTION. WE DON'T KNOW. WE HAVE NO CLUE WHAT HAPPENED.

NEWS OF THE OVERCHARGE SHOCKED OTHER DEBIT CARD CUSTOMERS.

VICTOR ANGON, CUSTOMER
WOW! NO, NOT WANT I WANT TO SEE ON MY RECEIPT AT ALL, NOT AT ALL.

INITIALLY, ARCO BLAMED THE BANK BUT SAID THEY'D MAKE GOOD AND TAKE CARE OF GEORGE'S CASE.

GEORGE MACK, CUSTOMER
FOR 3,700 GALLONS AT FOUR DOLLARS A GALLON, WHAT ARE LOOKING AT? 13- OR 14-THOUSAND DOLLARS? THEY ONLY CHARGED ME $2,297 DOLLARS. HECK, I'LL TAKE THE GAS!

I'm surprised he didn't complain about the $0.45 fee to use your ATM card at Arco.

On a lighter note, I put $12 in the machine at Arco and had to get $1.50 in change. I guess there's still 3/8 of a gallon in my tank when the gas light comes on. I don't know why motorcycle manufacturers don't like putting gas gauges on their bikes.

I procrastinated filling my Van for 2 weeks. Price for 35gal went from something like $105 to $130. :-(

Once at a car parts place (that's closed now) I bought $35 worth of oil, put the guy had fat fingers and hit $3500 on the credit card machine. He immediatly refunded me, but it put a hold on that $3500 on my CC, which then caused a decline at dinner that night and made a hotel check-in impossible (my groom-to-be had to pay for his own bachlor party).

Motorcycle mfg seem to be going backwards. My 88 Yamaha FZ750 has a gas gauge, a reserve part of the tank that's activated by a switch and self canceling turn signals. My newer bike has none of that. Oh, and the 750 gets 52 mpg.
