CASOC Summer Test n Tune and Picnic - April 30, 2011

Post by George Schilling »

It's time again for the world famous CASOC Summer Test 'n' Tune and Picnic where your stomach shares the spotlight with you car. In addition to a first class autox course designed by the CASOC team, we're planning on skid pad and slalom practice areas, a place for kids to hone their skills in their karts, and of course the world famous CASOC food court. OK, OK, maybe it's not world famous, but the food is delicious, plentiful and FREE. We're looking for a hundred or so folks to come out and join in the fun. We expect to get the usual 12 runs each, maybe more, though it's not guaranteed.

What to expect - For this event, we're going to try and keep work time to a minimum and fun time at a maximum. With daytime highs averaging 73 degrees, the weather should be perfect. The course will be fast and flowing. Food will be available for about three hours starting at about 11:00 so no need to rush. There will be plenty to eat. Expect a run about every 15 minutes. For those serious tuners, we'll be making special accommodation to allow your runs in optimal conditions. And of course there's that fabulous El Toro grip.

When you arrive - Come through the main gate on Marine Way and turn right. Follow the ORANGE POINTER CONES to our site. Be sure to sign the event waiver at the entrance to our area. Park your car in any open spot and come to registration for check-in.

Novices - We at CASOC and CSCC welcome new participants to the sport. Our autoxs are work/run events and our organization is not for profit. We're all volunteers. Everyone pitches-in and shares in the work as well as the fun. It is important that you show up to work on time and complete your work assignment. We realize that getting started can be confusing. To help you get acclimated, our Novice Coordinator Leonard Cachola will be there to answer questions and help familiarize you with the course and procedures. A course walk to help you with learning the course will leave the starting line @7:30 AM. Please be on time. Once the event begins, instructors are available to help you and most drivers are happy to give ride-alongs. We're a very friendly group, so if you have any questions, don't hesitate to ask any of the participants here today. A smile and a courteous attitude will go long way toward making you autox experience a great one. For more information to help you get started, check out our guide for newbies @ http://www.solo2.com/MiscDocuments/CSCC ... _Guide.pdf" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Make it a weekend - The fun doesn't stop when we knock off on Saturday. AutoxSunday is when the real fun begins. It's here where you put your tuning to the test. This is the time to invite your friends for a friendly challenge to show off your driver skills and collect the hardware that goes topping the field in your class. For novices we have a special class where you can compete against others who are new to the sport. Novice instructors are always available.

Accommodations - The La Quinta Inn @14972 Sand Canyon, Irvine, CA 92618 is just a block from our venue. Tia Juana’s Long Bar and Grill, Knowlwood Restaurant, Denny's and Jack in the Box are all with walking distance of the hotel. Of course many of Orange County's finest hotels, restaurants and nightlife are within a 10 minute drive.

No Overnight Camping - There is no overnight camping allowed on this site. However, personal belongings, including vehicles, may remain overnight. Everything must be removed by the time we leave on Sunday. Neither Cal Club, CASOC, El Toro Fields or AMCI will be responsible for damaged, lost or stolen property.

Driving directions - For for turn by turn driving directions to the event, just left click on the map to the right. For those preferring to use GPS, use 6982 Marine Way, Irvine, CA 92618 as the destination.

VERY IMPORTANT - As with any venue, we want to make a good impression on our landlords. With that in mind, please use the receptacles for your trash and do not leave trash anywhere on site. Also, have respect for the neighbors and drive carefully both inside and outside the site.

Looks like I didn't make it. :(
What are the chances of a last minute entry?
Maybe someone from the list don't make it for some reason?

How much time before an event should someone typically plan to register?

There are 15 people on the waiting list. There is typically some movement up until the cancellation date, so keep checking. You're welcome to come to the event to see if someone doesn't check in. I'd say there is a 40-50% chance one or two people get in that way. Less in the summer, more in the beginning/end of the year. Best time to register is immediately after the flyer goes up, which is posted here in the forums.

No, he was talking to Chris Holmes. From what I can see (I have admin access to MSR) there's at least 8 people ahead of you on the wait list. So the chances of getting in that way are small. Better odds just showing up and seeing what spots open up then. You must realize getting into practices is a little difficult. There is high demand and limited spaces. Hosting clubs generally let in their members first, then invited guests, then the remaining spots to others based on when they applied.

OK well..... I'll be there anyways to help out in what ever way I can I need to learn a lot about this sport & want to work that day. ( Probably the best way to learn is to get in there & work eh? )

Do I check in for a job duty that morning or sign up before hand?

If all you're doing is volunteering you don't need to sign in. However, I would recommend bringing your driving gear and checking with registration for open spots, just in case.
If you don't get in, make sure to take lots of rides with all the really fast people out there. Don't be shy about asking for a ride along, but don't be offended if the answer is 'no'. Don't ask anybody that's already in the staging lane, only in grid. Tell 'em you're new to the sport and want to learn whatever you can. Study their lines and car control, and listen to what they have to say. Finally, thank them for their time. I took lots of rides last year (while I had no car) and learned a lot! Also, have fun!

Looks like I will be there sharing the day with Nic Sanchez in our white Miatas  & I still plan to show up early & help out where I can & try to learn as much as I can, so I don't look too clueless on Sunday. :?

Just a quick comment regarding the map on motorsportsreg: it should be updated to the "6982 Marine Way, Irvine, CA 92618" in the directions, instead of just "Marine Way ...".

When clicking through motorsportsreg & trying to get directions, it will route you in a different way (not sure if that way even works, never drove it that way - i.e. 133 to Irvine Blvd & around the back).

I think that's the RV storage entrance, which won't get you legally to the runways.

Hearing that strong winds are delaying the start of the event until 10:30 ... with a possibility of cancellation! How unusual for El Toro!!! Not a bit of wind here in South Pasadena

Dozens bailed, if you want to run and don't mind the chance of cancellation, there will surely be openings. No guarantees, I don't speak for George, just observing the scene.

Cones are fairly week scrambled. Getting in and out of rvs is a two person job to hold the door... Brutal.

Weird ? El Toro?!

Karen and I are hoping to run tomorrow ... since I'm spending the next four days in Irvine anyway ... shooting time lapse for UCI. Nice, they're putting us up at the Newport Beach Marriott.

:( stopping by to visit ... but no racing for us tomorrow. Still got more camera prep work to do, and the brakes aren't feeling so hot on Karen's Miata ... need new front rotors. Track days really take their toil on them. Lots of fine cracks on what's left of the rotors.
