Im kind of new to R comps (Hoosier A6) so have a heart.
I have been collecting a lot of abandoned rubber on my tires while on course and its been fusing with my tires.
It has actually filled in one of the groove lines completly.
I think this would effect the tire performance, am I right?
So do I use my first lap just to scrubb this off?
Do I need to worry about this at all?

Damn, is that what that was. He had me using it all wrong.

The tire scrapers are available at C2 Motorsports. They're inexpensive and work great. Give Steve a call. Their banner is on the Solo2.com site.

I use a small hand held torch and a putty knife to remove build-up, works great.

Jeff and Nicole have been wondering where THEIR rubber has gone ... please get in touch with them so that you can return it.

Most people complain about going through their R's. You should be happy!

these Hoosiers have been holding up nicely 40+ runs. But Maybe Im not going fast enough to kill em.
Jeff is more than welcomed to come and peel his tires off mine.

Jason, given that race tire life is often measured in heat cycles rather than calendar age, are you concerned what the flame contact might be doing to the good rubber? I realize it's brief, and mostly directed to the pickup, but I'm sure it would seriously blister your skin...might it not cause at least surface damage to the rubber?

I grind off the pickup with a 5" disc grinder fitted with a stiff wire brush cup. And try to limit the brush contact to the pickup. But I'm sure the result isn't as good looking as you can get with a torch and spatula.

If I was worried about "heat cycles" I would not drive to events on my tires either.

Just like your method, I only heat up the area with the rubber pick-up, which is not the whole tire.
