Cool.
Anybody know where there's a Fiat X1/9 lying around?

"Per the SMAC, a bolt-on subframe can be replaced as long as the replacement weighs at least as much as the original and
does not alter suspension geometry. (#6740)"
How long before we see a 3-rotor Miata?

That just means it's lighter!

well when a 2 rotor turbo has a lower minimum weight and makes the same or more power....probably never.

That Tech Bulletin seems a bit... less than useful to me, so I'll explain a little further. 2012 rules permit subframe replacement or modification:
16.1.T. Alternate subframes are allowed to facilitate engine mounting only. Suspension pick-up points on the subframe must retain standard geometry. Weight of the subframe must be equal or greater than the standard unit.
The letter writer had a specific question, but the key points are still evident: suspension geometry must remain unaltered from stock, subframe weight cannot be less than stock (easily accommodated with ballast in the construction), and this modification is only permitted to facilitate engine mounting. So yes, a rotary engine should totally be feasible in a Miata.

So a Miata with a Renesis and 275 tires would have to weigh 2020 lbs. ?
But with a turbo rotary it has to weigh 2300 lbs. ?
I wonder if Bill's CSP car would be any faster with a Renesis... Lower CG, more revs, more horsepower but probably less torque?

Well, if finishing = faster.... No valvetrain issues.

the internet says the NC is an easier renesis swap.
looks like the NA/NB's need some frame/firewall trimming to make it work...but that's just what the internet says. maybe with some scca rule book focus and more money it could be done.

I bet those fitment issues have more to do with the transmission than anything else... which is open in SM, right?

the pics i found it was the engine that was hitting the fire wall when you put the trans in its normal spot. can't really move the engine forward much more because the steering rack is already going through the oil pan.

Interesting... Can you get an NC that light?

Steve O'B would be your expert ... he's been helping Jamie put a Renesis into her Miata ... instead of a V8. She use to work at Monster Miata as a welder.

If anyone is interested in a nice X1/9, my neighbor in Santa Barbara has one (along with a Ferrari Dino, rare Turbo Lancia Monte Carlo, Brabus Smart car, and a Honda CR-Z)
FOR SALE:
1974 Fiat X1/9. Color: Kelley Green w/ Black interior; All stock, but smog rail has been removed (I have the original) and the air pump disconnected (I have the belt); This is a first-year car: No catalytic converter; no 5 mph bumpers. Super light. Very low VIN number; I am the original owner; English Mercury Mags with new tires; Abarth "Ducktail" spoiler on trunk; 1300cc / 4 speed. Corbeau racing seats. Never raced. I also have many spares including a full set of Koni shocks, an extra transmission, an extra Targa top, and various suspension bits. All original service records since new including original Monroney sticker. This would make a great show car or racer. Originally purchased in Ontario, California this car has never left the state.

Why am I so tempted by this? Apparently, the memory of those years of laying upside-down in footwells replacing leaky master cylinders has faded.
Regarding the NC, I worked on a proposal to build a Renesis-powered one a couple of years ago... it's very straightforward.
What I am imagining is the drivetrain of one certain shiny black RX-7 wedged into the shell of a certain flat black '99 Miata.

I always thought this one in San Diego was very cool. Last I saw it, a few years ago, it was running without fenders if I recall correctly?
Anyone know what happened to it ...

That would be a question for Mr. Edwards.

Any idea what your friend is looking to get for it? And, of course any interest would be enhanced by a photo or two posted here or better, in the FOR SALE section.
