What are people's general approach to decals for the national event when you have a car that's not dedicated to autocross? Applying the decals to vinyl or magnetic stock before putting them on the paint? Or is there a product out there to remove them after the race that won't do damage to the paint? What do the more experienced hands out there do?

A coat of wax before applying the decal and/or apply decal to your t-shirt first and then to the paint.

Lots of techniques.

You can put them on magnet stock (which I have!), but the mag doesn't last forever so after a few years it's no good. That would be fine if your using them 5 times a year, but once a year might not be worth it. It's also very common to pre-stick the stickers to you shirt or pants. This picks up a ton of lint then the decal doesn't stick nearly as hard.

The 'Tire Rack' windshield banner will usually come off easy enough if you let it warm up in the sun first. If you have something up there already, you can lay down a layer of blue tape then put the TireRack decal on top of that.

Even if you put them on and leave them on there for a year (like I did), a blow dryer makes getting them off pretty easy.

You can also trim back 1/8" of the sticker backing, thus only using a small sliver of sticky around the perimeter that is easy to take off and wind-proof out on course.
