So backstory to my question, I was given a prototype rollercoaster seat with padding and such. Initially I was planning on turning it into a gaming chair, but after moving it around and carrying it I became curious if it would be legal to turn it into a racing seat. Its not certified and its not particularly light at 16lbs but its really really comfortable with almost no upholstery on it and it fits my quite large frame with ease which most racing seats don't.

So here is my question would this seat be legal for autox or do I need some sort of certification for it to be legal?

no, it just need to be 25lbs or more and come up to the middle of your head.

B. The driver and front passenger seats may be replaced with the following

The top of the seat, or an attached headrest, may not be below the
center of the driver’s head. The seat, including mounting hardware,
must weigh at least 25 pounds and must be attached using the OE

Well it could be a legal seat though, assuming it has a proper height head rest.

You can add upholstery to cover the seating surface.
Using the original sliding rails + the adapter hardware will get a 16lb seat close to the required 25lbs. Even if its not, you can bolt on some extra wieght until it is.

Yeah the headrest is the appropriate height, the only thing I don't like is it has a hump for the crotch like most roller coasters. The seat itself looks kind of like a Recaro or Sparco competition seat but with no upholstery. I've got to pad the center of the backrest but other than that I think it might be a decent race seat.

Cool looking seat, making brackets to mount to the factory holes will be tricky .

There are 4 large bearing/washers underneath the bottom foam, it'll still be tricky but doable. I'm still on the fence about what I'll do with it but either way it'll be a comfortable seat.

Given the hump in the middle if you put it in the car, be real careful not to rear end someone.

On the plus side, after the sudden stopping maneuver, you'll be able to hit the high notes at the opera!

It might be legal but its probably a stupid idea. How much longitudinal load is that seat designed to take in a rear impact? How much lateral load is that seat designed to take in a side impact? How well is the back reinforcement for the shoulder harness? Its designed for roll coasters, not cars. Save it for your game console and buy a real , tested, and certified race seat for racing.

I don't trust my handiwork enough to make a car seat mount for the thing, I was more curious about if it was even legal to do so.

I can't really answer your questions since I'm not sure what I'm allowed to talk about, but I will say that its far sturdier than you would expect, I would imagine is probably just as safe as a non fia rated seat from say sparco or kirkey.
