The car is a 2005 VW beetle 1.8t that will be turned into a really bad idea but awesome Lemons/Chump endurance car, does anyone here know of common problems on these cars? Specifically I'm looking for engine and suspension problems so we can address them before it gets cut up.
I can't say whether they have actually featured one, but Grassroots Motorsport Magazine routinely features a make/model and answers things like what you are looking for for various years that the car was produced. You might check out their online archives.

I love my VW Jetta Wagon (VR6).

The 1.8T is a pretty strong engine. Lots of aftermarket mods available to up the power. Ran a Bettle Turbo for half a season in SD, pushes like a pig on an autocross course. Moving the engine back should solve some of the push issues... RWD should solve even more if that's the reason for the engine move. Sounds like fun to me!
