Change the following section from APPENDIX A of the CSCC Supplementary Regulations from:

NOVICE (NOV):
To encourage new members/competitors to participate in autocross, and to allow
them to sharpen their skills without being discouraged by “getting their doors blown
off” by more experienced drivers, CLASS NOVICE (NOV) is herein established.
-Eligibility: To be eligible to compete in Novice Class, a driver
a) Has never competed in a Solo, or
b) Has not driven a Solo within the previous five (5) years.
-Each NOVICE class competitor will drive whatever car they bring, provided the car
passes Technical inspection, and will compete in the appropriate class for the car.
-Novice class drivers compete in the same run group as the reg. class for the car.
-After having competed for one season in the NOVICE class, or if the driver
trophies, they must compete in the regular listed class beginning at the next event.
-Novice classes for Open and Ladies drivers will be listed in the results as NOVICE
and NOVICE-L. Trophies are awarded for NOVICE class; championship points will
not be awarded. GOOD LUCK, ALL NEW DRIVERS!

NOVICE (NOV) and NOVICE LADIES (NOVL)

a) Purpose of this class: To encourage new members/competitors to participate in autocross and be introduced into the community in a class structured for their needs. Also, to allow them to sharpen their skills without being discouraged by “getting their doors blown off” by more experienced drivers.
b) Eligibility: A person who has competed in fewer then 4 event weekends per year (practice, championship or both in a weekend) within the last 5 years.
c) The Novice class will always run in the run group immediately following the lunch break.
d) The Novice class participants work assignments will be spread out as needed during the event to avoid a run group where only this class is working.
e) There will be a guided Novice course walk during the lunch break, and the option of one during the morning walking session.
f) There will be separate registration cards for the Novice class. These cards will have a space for the indexed class and a checkbox indicating street tires or race tires.
g) Class results are based on the entrant’s best time multiplied by the National PAX/RTP Index for their SCCA Solo II class plus any penalty. This index is listed in Appendix C.
(Indented) 1. For cars with Stock, Street Prepared and Prepared Indexes: All cars running tires with a treadwear rating of 140 or higher will receive an additional PAX of .975 over their car’s standard PAX. The use of street tires must be indicated on the registration card.
h) Year end points will be calculated for this class.

Intresting proposal. from a logistics standpoint, what happens to the run group if there are 10 novices? or 50?

I'd say lets work on getting 50 novices first, then we'll figure out what to do with them.

I'm for everything except the fixed run group. Not even clear how it works. They run by themselves? Who works for them? If it's treated as a class running for year end points then it should be treated like any other class, made part of a run group and rotated with the groups. If they run for points do they also count in the two team points systems?

Came close in September. What was it? 45? But that was a big push made. And its the biggest number we've had since the oversubscribed days of 2003-2004ish. On a regular event, without a huge contingent in Topeka and with all those newbies and marquee types, we could probably go to eight groups or at least 4 groups in that half of the day and split the group.

Looking at it again, I do wonder how running them all in the group after lunch will work. And half the time thats the junior kart group too so just adding them in will make that ugly. How about have registration evenly disburse novices across the three afternoon heats. That's not that hard to do, we used to do it all the time when X runs were oversubscribed 5 years ago. And you wouldn't have to handle their work separately which is just as much work for reg as spreading them across the afternoon.

They just can't run in the first group. We ran into that yet again this last event where seb took all his runs super fast in the 2 driver line so he could instruct the novices. We end up running into it pretty much every event. You could do like SD does with PAX and just say Novice as a class doesn't run the first group and rotate them up one when they get to it... but that has a whole other set of problems.

As a group the novices definitely need to be spread out even if you rotated them, you can't have a whole group of novices working course. Just this last event someone at worker checkin signed up an entire corner with all novices, including the radio person. The worker checkin folks would need to be more vigilant and make sure they rotate the novices through other groups.

The after lunch part is so that they can get 2 walks in with instruction, plus they'll at least see other people going around the course before they drive.

I like the direction that Steve is thinking. Keep a list at registration like we did when we limited the X-runs to 10 per group. Make the rules so that the novice class runs anytime after lunch.
