Newbie here,
I've read the rule book a couple of times but I'm beginning to go bug eyed, Are AWD cars allowed in the SM class.

I have seen Evos in SM... so yeah.

I've got an 89' Starion. I was hoping to avoid the evo's and sti's but I guess that's not going to happen in SM or CSM.

Damon is one of the reasons I was asking about CSM origionally. (him and an RX-7 friend)


Its a Conquest with some mods. enough to make a cool street car but he will be out classed in CSM or SM, but the small ported head puts him out of SP.

Yeah, cool street cars rarely are classed well ;)

they need to make a class that allows all the power mods you can think of, but restricts everything else to stock.... lets call it....... FAH.

In addition to FAH we should also have an RSP class--Real Street Poser.

Minimum 2" diameter increase over stock wheels.
Coilovers on OEM shocks.
Max 35 series rubber Min 280 treadwear
Min 5" exhaust tip
Absolutely NO effective engines mods allowed.
Dress up kits and body kits encouraged.
Any fender flare over stock unmodified sheet metal.
Min 5" tach
Min 2 pillar gauges with tach, 3 without.
Min two fire bottles
Monochromatic decal scheme required

No, it should be called "OOC" - Oil On Course.

Wait....That cas is AWD? I thought the were RWD...Regardless, that car is sweet! I took an instructor run in it and thought it was pretty good, great power, no AWD push...handled like RWD. Some stiffer springs and stickier tires will do wonders for it.

I'm thinkin' we need just one class. The "I" Class. It's indexed with every person getting their own index. Maybe Renee could find the secret formula Craig used for the Seniors class. Or we can have a committee of 50 or so people randomly picked from the entrants at the last event of the previous season. They get to assign the index number to everyone. By whatever method they choose. A random number generator would probably work fine and reduce the bloodshed at the meeting.

Yup. 1992 I raced one..... red.....
My first ever trip to nationals in that car. thought it was great untill I started driving other cars.

Does he realize that all things being equal (on dry asphalt), a RWD car will handle better than an AWD car, since they generally have better weight distribution and you can use power-off oversteer more to help you in turns? What makes Evos and STIs so potent is their power and (in our region) the drivers. RWD > AWD > FWD

if he didnt know... he knows now.

Nationals on concrete will make life more interesting for Evo owners lacking a good challenge currently.

Of course, locally we don't run on concrete...

Agreed and good to learn. I think before I get too ahead of myself lots of practice is in order. I'm going to run this season out with my current set-up and learn to control it at limit. I'm guessing when I do increase grip with better suspension/ tires I will naturally be quicker in '09. BTW Sebastian- I've got a great picture of you driving my car. PM w/ your email and I can send it over.

That's what I've been doing. I've learned a TON in the last 6-7 mos. While you're doing that, you can start to familiarize yourself with the different allowances for each class and try to narrow down what you can do to set up your current car to be competitive in the most appropriate class. A lot of the folks on this board are walking encyclopediae and totally willing to share their knowledge).

Ultimately, you discover that an EF Honda is the only true autocross vehicle and your friends begin to disown you and plan interventions...
