R-S3 v1 TW200 or TW140?

Post by Guy Walker »

It looks like my new wheels and tires that I ordered back in December are not going to arrive in time for the Jan race this weekend... So that leaves me no choice but to run on my old Hankoook R-S3 v1's manufactured in 2012.

Would they be considered legal for Street class use in 2015 since it appears that Hankook rerated them from 140 to 200?

No, not considered legal.

not technically legal, but also not protestable....

i mean someone could protest them, but who is going to do that at a local event? for a tire that the manufacturer says is identical to one that is legal.

I mean, technically no but like Marshal said, I wouldn't bother protesting. But you're not racing me, gonna have to get by off from your other BS competitors, who are all very nice and understanding people. I'm sure thay'll say yes  Also, good luck getting new RS-3's. I've been looking and apparently they're out of a lot of sizes, tire rack is showing May for their delivery dates. Really sucks that I'm in desperate need to new rubber.

Thanks for the comments! I guess I'll have to chat with fellow BSer's.

That does suck! I feel your pain. I've already ordered my wheels and tires... It's just the custom offset 18" wheels that had to be made and are delayed. My 285/35-18 R-S3's are available and ready to be mounted. The 285-18's don't seem to have the same stocking issue as yours at Tirerack.

In any case, I'm a rule follower by nature and I hate asking for a personal exception when we all knew the rules ahead of time and it's my fault that I didn't order soon enough to handle a delay.

At least they still make your size... Hankook canned the size I use! I'm trying the new ZII Star Specs this weekend...

From my memory of the 30 years we've been an SCCA Region, the last time we had a protest at a local event was.......................... never. It's usually just the cheater being taken out behind the timing trailer by his fellow competitors and getting the crap knocked out of him. ;)

The RS-3's I thought changed compound in the V2's. And I hear many saying its better for autocross than the V1 TW140's were. Just repeating the rumor mill. The tire is out of stock in my size til 4/30. SD Tour and El Toro Pro are looking pretty damn bleak for STS guys.... :(

Just run them, no one locally is going to rain on your parade. The BMW has V2 up front and V1 on the rear due to the uneven wear/replacement rate F:R. The difference between the two tires in negligible in feel.
