Just got home...

Post by Mike Simanyi »

I just got home from the dealer, having the truck oil and filter changed and the tires rotated and balanced before heading off for Topeka.

I walked up to a salesman while I was waiting and found out he's one of our own - Barry Blackstone (has a C4 Corvette he's playing around with.) I was looking into the 2500 truck and took a test drive in the G8 GT. Good gawd, why would anyone consider an Accord or Camry when you can have a car with some style, a truly amazing exhaust note and what feels like some mighty fun road manners. Or I can just say: personality and looks.

Someone needs to slap around the marketing department at GM right now. They're keeping that thing a hidden treasure.

Barry has been with for about a year and his white C4 M6 just got some V710's. I haven't seen him in awhile but he is one of those guys that will help with what ever needs to be done.
Now I looked at the Chevy web page and cannot find the G8 GT even with a search. What is it??? GM must be keeping it under wraps

At least, their PR dept is doing a great job. The G8 has been followed closely by Car and Driver, Road and Track and the rest of the mainstream car mags and they've been talking up the arrival of the GT. The articles I've read have made very positive comparisons to the BMW 5 series, not just in the engine compartment, but also its chassis. I've been considering a test drive too...and I love the fact that the GT will be offered w/ a manual tranny (supposedly next year?).

It's actually a Pontiac.

The G8 is a Pontiac and in the right trim performs pretty darn well. I think its a pretty decent bang for the buck too. I'm sure the GM dealers are dealing more aggressively than the Honda and Toyota dealers.

I've always preferred domestics because I can get them for so much off sticker compared to the imports. I know the resale sucks, but we put 25K miles a year on them, thrash them to within an inch of their lives and dispose of them all but used up at Carmax after four years.

It'll be strange owning a car in Nov (the Bimmer Stacey ordered) that we'll have to concern ourselves with resale value on.

I havnt driven the G8 .... but my 05 GTO ( just about the same car minus 2 doors ) is wonderful. Great street driver, quiet, tight, very quick... obviously well built. If anyone is concidering something like this... they should definitly check out the G8

Except for a few bits of the interior, the G8 GT is a lot of fun. The six-speed automatic is better than most and holds the gear until you shift. Good brakes and good handling for a car that size.

I had dinner with the powertrain engineer and project manager at the launch. These guys were very enthusiastic about the car.

You might think they'd put on that show no matter what, but these engineering and product folks know when the product is shite and they're not very good at hiding it. These Pontiac guys were pretty happy overall. A couple of features could be better, interior could be better.

But like I said in my review, when you stand on the gas and the V-8 rockets you forward, who's lookin' at the cheap plastic interior?

The GXP and the G8GT are both doing well in the Grand Am series.

My general impression is that GM has been doing a great job lately on most fronts inspite of probably the most difficult macro conditions ever in the domestic automobile industry.

Economists would argue with me that the great depression and the OPEC oil embargo were more challenging times for Detroit. Not so sure about that.

I wondered how the US domestic car manufacturers could stay in business ... until I went to the mid-west and saw where they actually manage to sell some cars.
