Tire Rack Street Survival School Instructors Needed

Post by Randy Gonzalez »

Hey all,

Cal Club SCCA Autocross will be running a Tire Rack Street Survival School on Feb. 3rd 2019. We're looking for instructors for this event. The event is focused on driving skills for new drivers. This is not an autocross school like our November Novice schools. TRSS has a pre-defined curriculum and we'll be following their direction. Instructors will be required to complete a short online training just to get us all on the same page.

Our Novice Coordinator Leonard Cachola has volunteered to be the head instructor for the day. I'm acting in a similar capacity as an Event Master for the event (yes, I'll be ordering the portapotties!).

We're looking for about 15-20 of our club members to step up and help us with the event. Instructors of course, but we'll also need some help setting up some cones for the pre-described elements, set up some EZ-ups, run the registration table, etc. It's a new event for Leonard and I, so we're going to be nailing down the specific "jobs" over the next week or two...but if anybody would like to volunteer for something specific beyond instructing, we'll be happy to have the help.

We'll be providing lunch and there will be some shirts for the staff (please provide your shirt size!). And we'll find some ways to reward your volunteer efforts as a club.

Note: This is Super Bowl Sunday so please take that into consideration.

We'd love to have you all involved! Post here or PM (or email) me if you're interested.

See you out there!

I've got no plans.. being terrified by teenagers sounds like a solid way to liven up my Sunday.
Put me down as an instructor.

Originally I agreed to help, but, didn't realize the Super Bowl conflict at the time.
I respectfully rescind my offer to help. Apologies.

We have a classroom portion of the curriculum that includes a PowerPoint presentation. We'll be doing our classroom portion using the registration EZ-ups for the club. Does anybody have a garage TV or something they wouldn't mind bringing out that we could plug a laptop into? The class will be relatively small (we're anticipating 25-30 students at this point), but we'll need something bigger than the clubs single computer monitor. On that topic, we also might need to round up some folding chairs (camping chairs are probably OK) so all the students can sit down while Leonard "WOWs" them with his riveting presentation!

Do you still need more instructors? Stacey and I could do it. We could bring the rv out. It has a 32” tv outside under the awning. Probably have enough battery power to run the laptop and tv off inverter without genset noise too.

That's a generous offer, and I think that might be something that could work out nicely. Perhaps we "corral" the Club's RV with yours and give the outdoor "classroom" a little more enclosed feel (and potentially a bit more isolation from the track event that will be running around us that day).

We're currently on track for about 25 students, and we're looking to get like 15-20ish instructors (students will always have an instructor in the car with them so we're not doing a 2 to 1 ratio like the AX novice school). Also looking for anyone in our autocross family that would like to just hang out and help with the logistics for the day even if they don't want to instruct (we'll be doing an informal version of Gate and our typical Registration tables...with all the same wristbands of a typical SCCA event).

Brian needs an XXL shirt, and I would like an XL. I'm in for registration, or what ever you need (although I would prefer not to instruct). We haven't registered our girls yet, but the plan is for both to be attending.

The school has officially sold out!

We have our 30 students. Make sure you take the online training soon (it's really easy....doesn't take more than 15 mins).

And...if anybody has a line on a water truck, let me know ASAP....I've got a potential possibility, but nothing definite yet.

I'm going to send an email today or tomorrow with all of the details, but to answer you question:

The school is scheduled from 8:00 to 5:00 (I'd assume it'll be getting pretty dark and we'll need some time to clean up, so we'll be done a bit before that). If you could plan on being there by at least 7:30 that would be great. We'll have an pre-school instructors meeting before 8 and feed into our "driver's meeting" and instructor pairings shortly after 8:00.
