SEPTEMBER 25, 2008
Black flags at night
The Singapore Grand Prix will highlight the development of the new digiflag system to warn drivers with lights rather than flags.
Flag signals have been an integral part of the sport since the early days but with modern technology and new needs the idea of a new system has been developed so that race control is in charge of all signalling. Valerio Maioli, the company that is lighting the Singapore circuit, has come up with a system of light signals to keep the drivers informed of what is going on.
Thirty five display panels will be situated around the track. ontrolled by hand-held panels operated by officials at each marshals’ post, they will supplement the traditional flag signals. In addition the race director will have an overview of the warnings being displayed around the entire circuit, allowing more centralized, efficient communication of warnings to drivers.
And showing black flags at night?
"It is a black panel with a white edge around it," says Maioli.

Re: 2008 F1 Podium Picker Challenge: Singapore Grand Prix: Rd 15
Another inane decision from the stewards, Heidfeld penalized three spots on the grid for "getting in the way" of Barrichello. Apparently "getting in the way" includes slowing for a pit entrance that is 10 feet from the apex of the last corner before the front straight. That was in the first session of quali.
I sure hope tomorrow doesn't turnout to be a high-speed version of the Main St. Electrical Parade.

It was no Valencia in terms of excitement, so that was good.

Re: 2008 F1 Podium Picker Challenge: Singapore Grand Prix: Rd 15
What did you guys think of the course? Lots of redundant "features" but not as bad as some street circuits. I like the way we're seeing aggressive forced passing. Are the cars not so sensitive to following another car any more and thus losing front down force. Love the shot of the one car understeering into the barriers towards the end of the race. How often have we experienced that ourselves. How come he didn't just let up a bit on the brakes, straighten the steering and then re-apply ... like we do! Yeah, I know ... not much room, but he should have seen it coming. IMO ... too much light! Forget the Night aspect of the race. Like they said, Japan will be the next night race ... next year? Makes it's much better for TV audiences back in Europe ... and probably not a bad thing for local live viewing plus local TV. And a bit cooler in those tropical locations.
