Teaching my kid to gay bash?

Post by Kurt Rahn »

So my kid plays football (tackle w/ pads...really manly) on a local club. Tonight, his coach asked if anyone was in favor of Proposition 8, then, in front of the whole team, made fun of whomever raised their hands. He then proceeded to say he hates gays.

My wife an I pretty much blew a gasket when we heard about this. So I put it to you. Is it any better for a teacher to teach kids about gay marriage in school than it is for a coach to teach kids to be gay bashers? Am I a lunatic, or should I be as pissed as I am?

I would be pissed but it wouldn't shock me to hear that from a pee wee football coach. Actually, it wouldn't shock me to hear it from ANY football coach...

But would you want your kid to hear that $hit from someone he supposedly looks up to? Absolutely UNACCEPTABLE !

A bully in a bully pulpit. Someone needs to remind him that the kids are there to have fun, not be subjected to his socio-political dogma.

I would be furious with the coach. Its worse in my opinion for a teacher to teach hate than it is for them to teach tolerance to something that isn't generally accepted. If I had a kid, and I found out their football coach was teaching them how to think/feel I would tear the coach a new one. Then I would proceed to make a formal complaint to the necessary person/people/etc. If thats how he feels thats fine, but its not his place to talk about such things at football practice. Especially KIDS football practice.

I'd be totally in his face.

From about 11 on I would have been in his face as a kid. I dropped one coach when I was 16. Got expelled. On review got reinstated, put back on the team, the coach fired and my grandfather and I ran the team for the last couple of weeks of the season. That was the day of the infamous 110 in a school zone evading reckless arrest.... go home to your mommy.... Man... A lot of people yelled at me that day.

Don't you mean "Tonight, his coach asked if anyone was against Prop 8"?

Whoops. I was so pissed my fingers were going faster than my brain. Yes, against Prop 8.

We're all over him. Unfortunately it's his last year coaching and Sun. is the last game, so there probably aren't going to be any ramifications for him. But the league will ensure this doesn't happen again, I can guarantee you.

I'd say that that coach needs a new line of work, as he obviously is not suited to be molding the minds of young kids (warping, maybe).

Teaching kids to gay bash is bad enough, but ridiculing kids for their beliefs (shared with about half of the populace, apparently) is evil. No doubt this guy pushes little old ladies down on his way to pick up his next 12-pack of brews.
