SUV shocks - 2000 Explorer 4x4

Post by Bob Pl »

Truck is used as commuter mainly almost no off road. No tow. Maybe 2x a year to desert/beach. Time to replace @ 75k. OEM Ford shocks are easy to beat so what should I put on? This is my daughters truck.

Local shop I trust said KYB Gas Adjust, but which model? Other option?

Thanks all.

I'm a huge fan of Bilstein. They're not very expensive as shocks, they last way longer than anything else out there and they'll usually transform a car's on-road ride quality.

I'd go for Bilstein or KYB Gas-A-Just. I've had both on my cars and like them a lot.

Yeah I was gonna say...the Audi looks like it uses some variation of waterballoon, rather than shocks.

KYB's are good and cheap but the ride isn't nearly as good as the Bilsteins.
They both have a lifetime warranty, but the KYB's will start show age at about 30k and the Bilstein will go to at leat 100K
I've got them on the wife's 4 Runner the ride is fantastic

I used Pro Comp ES9000's on the dakota very similar to rancho 5000's (built on the same line at tenneco).

But then I got Bilsteins and haven't looked back. I have them on my ram 3500.

The old mopar crowd loves the kyb gas-a-justs. The story I heard is that they are early copies of the typical Bilstein design. In my experience they are much harsher than the Bils. They soften over time which I assume is the more rapid wear.

Bottomline.... The Bilsteins are worth it.
