The Story Behind #7 and #90
These numbers have been retired for a reason. I think it would be a shame to let the memory fade of two gentlemen that meant so much to our sport that their numbers were retired. That said, I have an idea that I hope people pick up and act on. I think we should dedicate a permanent spot on out web site to tell "The Story Behind #7 and #90." Memories could be submitted to a certain copy editor I know on this site (if he would accept) and the story of these gentlemen who meant so much to our sport could be told and preserved. That's all.

Re: The Story Behind #7 and #90
Bob Beamesderfer talked to me about some sort of oral history being documented and recorded for our region. I think we need to move on this before the people who can share with us the great memories and stories move on. I think as part of this project we should develop some sort of Hall of Fame.

I love this idea. I love to listen to the old stories and the (sometimes sordid) history.Steve Ekstrand wrote:Bob Beamesderfer talked to me about some sort of oral history being documented and recorded for our region. I was talking to Brian Robertson a long time ago and he was telling me these cool stories about some of the longtime GRA/Corvette guys like George Lynch. And he described some old videos and pics I'd love to see. I'm sure if we dig deep we'd not only honor some really cool people, but we'd have a nostalgic trip that would be both super cool and a great marketing tool for our region. NASA and Speedventures don't have our tradition, our history, our people.

Speaking of George ... what's up with the Lynches ... they've missed the last couple of races I believe, and aren't signed up for this weekend?

Re: The Story Behind #7 and #90
I still believe in the idea of an oral history. To be clear, an oral history would involve interviewing several longtime members of the region, and that means going back to the SCCSCC era, about the events and people who have shaped our sport. Ideally, these would be recorded on both video and audio tape. It's not project for a single weekend, but with planning could be accomplished during championship weekends and during meetings outside of events.George Schilling wrote:These numbers have been retired for a reason. It's important to include all voices that can tell part of the story.
Presentation on the site could include video, still photos [modern and historical] and audio.

For the near future, I was hoping you could write something to tell the story of these two in particular. Doesn't mean we can't do the other too.Bob Beamesderfer wrote:I still believe in the idea of an oral history. Re: The Story Behind #7 and #90
To do everything, and do it right is a big project and an ongoing one. It should NEVER be finished, but early work is most important to "catch up" on 55 years or so of history.
Craig is huge. But I also want to know more about Tak, Bob Puertas, the Merrills, and Grant Byers and so many more I unfortunately don't even know to ask about.

Why not an oral *and* a written history. Why limit the process? The more info, the better!

Re: The Story Behind #7 and #90
Let me know if I can help with this.
My first slalom was in 1968 @ Orange Co. Fairgrounds in Costa Mesa, as a member of SCCSCC (sicksick)
Alot of memories of the Crites, Russ Kissinger, Curly Merrill, Herb Berkman, Andy Clark, Earl Wheeler, Don Hume and of course MANY STORIES of an old crocthity guy named Angel.
I can also tell many lies, I mean stories about Renee and the Jardines.
I was Event chair @ Lone Pine in 83 and many times Master of Ceremonies @ the Awards Banquet (alot of brain cells lost there)
Happy to help if I can,
John Ward,
P.S. My permanent number was #59.

Re: The Story Behind #7 and #90
In the two years before John's first in 1968, a friend of mine, John Albers in a Spitfire, and myself, in a Bugeye Spite, ran in several slaloms (Hollywood Bowl, Riverside Raceway, Sears parking lot in Pomona, ...). The two big guns in HP were Elliot Forbes-Robinson and Devendorf/Jones. The Devendorf is David Devendorf's (runs an s2000 in San Diego) older brother, I can't remember his first name. I am sure that Dave could provide a contact for his brother, who I am sure remembers who did what in the early 60's.John Ward wrote:Let me know if I can help with this.

Re: The Story Behind #7 and #90
Thanks for the offer John. I think we should have several people who are willing to go meet up and take one of the old timers to lunch and do an "interview". If we get people in the same general area it'll be less of a burden and I think it will be a fun project for everybody involved.
And of course, I'd really like to start collecting some old photos and movies. We can help some of the oldtimers scan photos, I have a pretty portable setup. Movies, would need somebody more adept than I or a service.

Re: The Story Behind #7 and #90
Sports Car's Pacesetter series uses one to two hour long telephone interviews ... for their two page with photo stories.
Re: The Story Behind #7 and #90
In addition to individual interviews, it might be fun to get a few of these guys who ran/run together and let them just BS. I've found some of the most entertaining interactions like that.Steve Ekstrand wrote:Thanks for the offer John. And provide some alcohol so we can learn the good stuff....
Imagine if Katie Couric had gotten Sarah Palin drunk first... That would have been so much more entertaining. Tina Fey wouldn't have been able to improve on it.

At Craig's memorial we showed a slide show in his memory. I have been requested to re-show it at the awards banquet.
Come to the banquet and see some of the memories of Craig as a toddler, young man - marines and young families as well as more recent history of him and Renee. It's about 20 minutes and set to music. At the memorial it played continuously throughout the afternoon.

Re: The Story Behind #7 and #90
George: I thank you so very much from the bottom of my heart with the inspiration of telling a story behind #7 and #90. There are so many people out there that Craig touched and I would love to have them continue his memory. John Ward - You have been such a great friend to both Craig and myself. I can remember so many good times we had together. There's also another person that we need to remember who left us too soon - John Clark. Not too many of us left who remember John, but he was a big part of our Solo program.
Let's keep the memories going for everyone who these people touched. I can't thank everyone enough for keeping me going. I still miss Craig terribly everyday and it is still difficult, but through his strength and the friends I have made thruogh the love of this sport - I will survive!

Good to see that the Lynches are signed up for this weekend. Some of us were worried because we haven't seen them for awhile.
