Out of Work Autocrossers

Post by Kathy Teulie »

Hi,

Several people have suggested that I start a forum for out of work autocrossers.

The idea of the thread is if anyone has any suggestions and leads.

Please stay on subject since this is a serious matter.

Some websites that I found useful are as follows:
http://www.indeed.com" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
http://www.careerbuilder.com" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
http://www.monster.com" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
http://www.simplyhired.com/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
http://www.internetinc.com/top-100-job-board-niches" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
http://www.linkedin.com" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; (a networking site where jobs are listed)

I will start a list of persons who wish to have their names posted if someone has any leads or ideas:
Let me know if you would like your name listed.

Low paying jobs, but somewhat motorsports related and it might beat flipping burgers until your ship comes in. Could be he's filled them by now, but he seems to advertise periodically.

I've spoken to Hal over the phone -- he's a VW racer and seems a good guy. I hope to have him do some work on my rallycross modified.

If this applies to you, good luck with it. -- Bill

I would also suggest "Linked In" (linkedin.com). It's a networking service. A lot of recruiters post jobs there which aren't posted anywhere else. You can join groups of people/professionals in your area(s) of interest.

You need to be invited, so if you are interested, email me with an email that you want used fairly publicly (yahoo/ymail works well) and I'll send you an invitation. I have personally gotten several good leads. A relative of mine in automotive marketing just landed himself a VP job through linked in"

Here's a neat tip that an HR friend told me about - because it really impressed them.

Don't email resumes.

Print the resume out, along with ANY supporting documentation. Be sure to write a cover letter specifically to the head of HR - google will usually turn these up, or else some creative social engineering on the phone will. Arrange neatly in a 2-pocket folder. Burn a disc with everything that's printed, get a sleeve for it, label it and tuck it in the folder. Get business cards and put one in the ears inside the folder. This costs less than two bucks per package...once you've got all the crap in one place.

When you show up to drop this off, it's extremely hard for people not to take you seriously. You clearly have a well-prepared package and that will not only get the receptionist to take you seriously, it will work on the rest of the people there too. Whatever they need is there - hard copy, soft copy, whatever.

And be sure to smile. That's where I always blow it. :)

It works. Be strong - there is hope.

Does anyone have any other ideas as how to find a job? I will try Larry's idea.

I have been looking on the job boards, and talking to headhunters and consulting companies. I need some ideas since this is not working.

Thanks,

Kathy

Kathy,
Have you tried any of the temp agencies. Account Temps (Ajilon) is a good one.

When Stacey got laid off way back in the mid 90's, she was able to get a temp job with a major LA firm even when nobody was hiring in the legal profession. The temp job didn't build career points, but it paid the mortgage and it allowed her to say in job interviews that she was working on a temp basis supporting a huge multi-party litigation matter for a major LA firm. It also kept her fresh and in contact with her extended professional network.
