2009 Wendover ProSolo

Post by Christine Grice »

Don't forget to register before "standard fees" kick in this friday (4/10/09)!!!

Sould be very interesting since it won't be as hot and windy as a blast furnace this year. Although it could be a little cold and rainy:

"Early registration" fees end today at 4 pm Central time.

And it looks like the Utah region is doing a great job to get the surface prepared for us:

Anyone who hasn't booked a hotel yet the Utah region also got us a deal for $10 off per night at the Montego Bay or Rainbow:

Just signed up. 1st trip to Wendover.

Looking online in both Wendover UT, and Wendover West, NV I found 6 hotels: Knights Inn, Best Western, Days Inn, Motel 6, Econolodge, Amerca's Inn.

None on my prefered list.

Then there's the reviews, everyone of them has horrendous reviews on every sight I looked at Hotwire, Travelocity, hotels.com etc., except by pet owners. Apparently every hotel review that mention of a pet, liked the hotels. Guess any hotel that accepts pets is good on their lists, as so few accept them. Based strictly on the online reviews, which rat hole do most stay at?

The Casinos.. at least they have the money to keep their rooms up. There's a thread about where to stay and stuff on here somewhere.

Those aren't the hotels most stay at in Wendover.

Montego Bay and Peppermill are the best. Rainbow is the other casino.

I stayed at Peppermill last time and it was very nice. But a little pricey.

Jacuzzi Suite at Montego Bay is supposed to be the ticket.

So which is the preferred route from Vegas, 93 all the way up or 318? I believe that the Silver State Classic is run on 318, so while it would easily accommodate "brisk" traveling, I worry it's heavily patrolled. Any advice from those that have made the trip?

Taking the 318 saves about 40 miles. Make sure to get gas in Ash spring or Alamo because from there to Ely its over 100 miles of nothingness.

We've never had a problem with "brisk" driving because we have always been towing but I know that we always get passed by Brian R, Gary T, Leslie C, Jason U and thier group in about the same spot every year so ask one of them if they've ever had trouble.

Anybody know if the stations on those little roads have Diesel... And clearance for 13'6" heights.... And ingress/egress for a 55" rig? :mrt:

We're comparable to many semi's. Not larger in any dimension than the typical. But Semi's have HUGE range.
My range towing in hills could be as low as about 270miles. But its usually over 375.

I don't think you'll have any problems Steve.

Here is the google maps view of the Alamo gas station/grocery store/deli...
http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&source= ... 9&t=h&z=18" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

And here is the Shell station in Ash springs:
http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&source= ... 8&t=h&z=17" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

And Ely is a large enough town with enough trucks going though it.

We usually stop in Vegas, Ash Springs, Ely, Wendover. Other than a grade up into Ely there really isn't much in the way of terrain along that road.

I always take the 318. Sure it's only a 2 lane highway, but it's a nice drive and not really much (if any) longer than the 95.

So I assume this means that you're coming Brian?

Steve, I usually get gas at the Chevron in Alamo. No problem getting a semi in there as they have separate diesel pumps with more than enough room to turn your rig around, and the deli in the market isn't too bad. And gas again at the Shell in Ely which is also pretty friendly to big truck/trailer combos...

Thanks Jason. I'm pretty sure I stopped at both those stations. I made the trip once in the Neon.

I don't remember seeing a cop on the highway in remote sections. But I did see pretty serious patrol of the small towns you go through.

No much of anything going on when on the open road, but watch your speed around the towns like Steve said. I think Ken got popped in a speed trap.

Yes there are a lot of "brisk" sections of hwy going up there. :) Folks say to watch out for the free range cattle that can cross the road.

Also be sure to pronounce "Ely" correctly.

With no clue when work might start for the year, need to keep expenses down. Anyone looking for a roommate?

Also, my range in the Miata is a pittance at 200 miles, (getting terrible MPG, can't even make it from Arcadia to the Q and back to Escondido on a tank) will I make it between the cities mentioned above in Nevada?

Thanks guys.

Yes Jason, we'll be there. Max told me he knows how to win $600 on the slots in 5 minutes.

We cheaped out and booked at a room at the Rainbow. Gotta represent my Miata roots.

Now that the forecast is now so awesomely showing good chances of rain all weekend, can anybody offer any details on the surface? I'd guess that since it's an airport, it should drain well; any chance it's grooved?
