F1 KERS in car video overlay question

Post by Kristoffer Gjevre »

Is there a good explanation somewhere on the web about what the in car video graphics overlay (rpm, brakes, etc) indicates as far as KERS?
The only thing I could figure out was when KERS was used, but charge status and recharge updates (during braking) I could not figure out...

Any why did the McLaren want Lewis to use KERS while behind the Safety Car, as heard here:

Listen to the Hamilton interview and radiotransmission
http://www.f1complete.com/content/view/12061/900/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Team: OK Lewis, your KERS is full, your KERS is full. Just be aware. You can go back to black F2, black Foxtrott 2.
...
...
Team: Lewis, work on your brakes please. Front brakes are cold.
Team: If we are able to use one KERS that would be good. If you deploy KERS please do so now.

I like the idea of KERS, tt obviously needs more refinement though, and I think it was implemented too hastily. It's downright dangerous right now.

That is old news from July 08.
There also was a case last year when a team had to evacuate their facitilties because of KERS testing gone bad... might have been Red Bull.

More recently Kimi's Ferrari had an issue in practice for Malaysia I think it was where it started to smoke and he had to jump out.

Oh I know of this incident, I just didn't know that there was a video of it. KERS is a good idea in theory but if you listen to Steve Matchett's explanation of why he's against it, it makes sense. There are OTHER ways to be "green" without KERS weight, danger and expense.

I have not heard his explanation... is this it:
Speed TV’s Steve Matchett made no bones about his displeasure with KERS as it seems nonsensical to the program and if they wanted to really be “green” just limit the amount of fuel the engine can use. Or so that is my paraphrase of Steve’s position.

Steve Matchett said during the broadcast of the Chinese F1 race (I very liberally paraphrase): "What in hell is going on with all this ridiculous KERS junk? It is already being used in car design and has no place or significance in F1. I'd rather see V12 engines come back to F1."

"limit the amount of fuel" - please no!!!
"I'd rather see V12 engines come" - yes please!!!
But instead we will get the world engine (4 banger turbo) from Max... :-(
At least lets stay with the V8... I love V8 power... :D

ALMS is way ahead of F1 in "green" racing efforts.
