So I guess to avoid diesel smog check one could get a F450?
Are there special driver licensing or other downsides to to this monster (besides the purchase price and fuel cost)?

You'd have to be towing your toyhauler or be hauling your camper all the time. Maybe a camper shell would be sufficient to prove to the state of CA that you do not intend to use your 450 as a commercial vehicle.

Its bad enough that the state just sent me a Registration renewal for $800 on my '08 3500 Ram.
I can't really mod it because it has all the DPF crap on it. So, they get to drag me in for a waste of time while they bust all the 1000ftlbs 24v cummins owners......

See the FAQ pdf I linked above - I thought it was starting with 2008 models but in the FAQ it mentions 1998 - more of the FAQ:

Another reason to keep my '97 12v. :D

'98 was a big emissions change year for diesels. Cummins had to change from 12v mechinical injection to 24v electronic to pass the new standards.

Unfortunately, the DMV link has changed since that post.

The pre 98 VW Diesels were hard to find before, now it seems like they don't even exist
