Mother's Day karting

Post by Steve Ekstrand »

Most of our regions FJC and FJB contingent hit the Kart track at Willow Springs for a Mother's Day Karting and BBQ lovefest.
Great day out with the Yeoh's, Christopher's, and Kalman's.

Here is Robert in his little C50 Kid kart trying to hold off (hold up?) the "big girls" in there FJB Comer K80's.

This is track stuff not autox so we have limited passing and up to 4 karts lapping at once.

Very cool ... his body leaning shows that he's really into it and trusting the kart and his abilities!

I'm glad I'll be retired before I have to go up against him!

When he gets into a little faster kart and gets more advanced we'll have to try to break him of that. You need to try to lift the inside rear wheel to free up turns with a solid axle. So, leaning in is bad karting form.

But its so cute, and he is soooooo in to it. We don't do much correcting or coaching with him. Just safety stuff and encouragement. He's finding his own way pretty darn well. I wish the same could be said for reading... Listening to his parents... Not being wild and crude and inappropriate.... Not pouring red G2 down his shirt.... Not drawing with crayons on the side of the trailer.... And a dozen more bad behaviors.... Put him in a kart and he's a mature focused little racer.

It was fun to watch both Robert and Dane get pushing it harder as Kencey and Neelu would pass them. They would try to keep up with the older kids for a couple of laps and it was pretty exciting to see them push the limits.

I wonder if the leaning is a function of him trying to fight the g-forces on his helmet, or if the steering is too heavy for him and he's leaning over to turn the wheel?

He's taking a pretty good line in the tighter corners. Impressive.
