Any AX'ing Archers out there?

Karen and I discovered that we live near the Pasadena Arroyo Archery range. Instead of the hassle and expense of shooting pistols we're now firing arrows ... sort of a greener sport. Anyone else doing this?

An excellent bow "only" cost as much as a set of R's ... but should last a lot longer. $40 graphite arrows ... think mini golf club construction. Looks like we'll be staying with Re-curve bows and field target shooting ... although there are a surprising number of back to basics, Long Bows, besides the powerful Compound Bow techno wonders. We understand there is even a contingency of traditional Japanese super Long Bow shooters. (Plus the japanese fighting stick group ... as practiced by Spiderwomen Jamie Lessie and her BF.) We've seen about 300 yards of our Arroyos field target range so far.

I shot some back in H.S. & College. While I would agree compound bows are cheating for game and /or distance targets, there no advantage on typical range length targets. You just have to pull that much harder & risk breaking your arrows, removing them from the targets.

Good friend & roommate sophomore year in college did qualify and traveled to (Phoenix?) Arizona for the Archery Olympic tryouts for the '88 Games. Didn't make the team... but it was fun to shoot with him.

I haven't thought of it in years..... have no idea what happened to my bow, maybe it's still in my parents garage. I can't find any pictures online that resemble it. But it was a three piece recurve, 5 way adjustable site (x/y/z axis), (can't recall the technical term) but both a forward balance rod, and angled two side rods w/ screw on weights.

Mako, it would be fun to join you some day down in the Arroyo. (It's only been 20+ years, wow, how time flies.)

I used to shoot for a long time, but left my bow back in PA when I moved here as I had no idea where I would shoot. Perhaps I could bring it back with me after my next trip....

Hi-Tech Archery in Fullerston is THE Candy Store for Archers in the LA/OC area. They also have a 20 Yard indoor range, with about 16 positions.

At Hi-Tech yesterday I ran into a fellow that turns out to be one of the Advanced Instructors with our Pasadena Roving Archers while at Hi-Tech. He's also the coach for one of the colleges and was giving lessons. He twisted my arm to spend twice as much as I had planned ... of course saving me money in the long term, ie. 3 to 6 months! :gpower:
