Oh, and FWIW, most local Checker/Autozones (CSK type stores) here in AZ carry DEI branded adhesive-backed heat barrier material.

There are good reasons to wrap the header.

I kicked myself for not having the header first sent directly to JetHot Coating in AZ! Not that expensive, fast ... and seemingly pretty effective. Used it on my Suby downpipe.

I've heard that too. Wrapping keeps the a lot more heat inside the header and eventually destroys it.

Although of course performance wise that is what we want to do ... keep the heat within the system until it exits through the tail pipe. Exhaust headers are just part of our list of eventual expendables.

So anyone know the life of a wrapped header? Are we talking months or years ...

Is it legal in a class like SST to have a safely propped open hood when one is running? Unlatched to the safety catch and then double secured with some type of leash.

Philip has the same header on his Miata, and after numerous club races - where it undoubtedly gets hotter than at an autocross - there has be no issues with those hoses. Don't bother.

good thread. I am in the process of developing heat shields for the ST crowd (ST-Civics) along side Rally Innovations. Its a bolt on OEM style heatshield that should work with most headers available (exclude: bisimoto, ie spagetti header).

I would say years, easily. As long as you wrap it tight (and put that wrap DEI wrap spray on to prevent it from soaking up random oils, etc), you should be good to go. Of course, you'd need to remove the header, at which point might as well get it coated.

I had my turbo dump pipe coated for 2000 degrees @ a local place in Huntington Beach (Specialized Coating? or something like that), it's held up pretty decent & is cheaper in cost than Jet Hot. I also wrapped & sprayed w/ exhaust heat wrap AND put some aluminum "micro louver" super crazy heat shield stuff around it. I guess my car's a special case, where I actually need all that heat shielding to protect from destroying my brake reservoir.
