Local Wine Basics Classes?

Post by Vincent Komara »

Looking for a wine basics class offered locally(LA/Orange County). Preferably a one day overview type class. My wife is interested in learning the basics, currently we know nothing about wines. Any recommendations?

I'll check w/ my mom and let you know. She's a food/travel writer, so she should have a few good suggestions.

The sommelier at Charlie Palmer's in South Coast Plaza was offering something a while back, you might check with them.

Also, if you want to learn from the master, Michael Jordan (no not that one) the sommelier at Napa Rose at Disneyland, was offering some classes recently too.
That's where I'd start!

If you want something more casual, go hang out downstairs at Hi-Time in Costa Mesa.

As a connoisseur of wine myself, I can attest that the orange pineapple variety of Boone's Farm is very tasty. I'm not sure where they get the orange and pineapple grapes though.

If that fails your taste buds, Morry's of Naples in Long Beach offers classes I believe. They've been around for years and their cellar is well stocked.

Thanks for the replies. Checked with the sources mentioned above and called around some local places but all I found was wine tasting or events focused on different types of wine. I did find a site learnaboutwine.com that offers a wine 1.0 class in LA. Sounds like what I am looking for but I hate to just randomly pull something from the internet. Maybe I'll take a chance....

The Very Basics:
1. Unscrew cap.
2. Insert open end of bottle in mouth.
3. Tilt bottom of bottle upwards.
4. Swallow fluid as it enters your mouth (advanced users may wish to "swish" the fluid around before swallowing).
5. Repeat 3 & 4 until either the bottle is empty or you can't hold it anymore.

 Sorry, couldn't resist.

Thanks. The Laguna Culinary Arts class sounds like the ticket!
