I put this here instead of the Political Paddock because it's informational. The State is going to bump up withholding by 10% so you can give them an interest-free loan to help cover up their fiscal irresponsibility. The change will remain in effect indefinitely - and don't forget their little IOU stunt that may just extend the length of the "loan".

Personally, I'll be bumping up the dependent count on my taxes tomorrow.

Not to mention that if you should underpay your state taxes by more than 10% I believe, you might be liable for penalties.

State government in California is ineffective, so much so that its size is almost irrelevant. If it were more effective, it could be smaller. Making it bigger just exacerbates how ineffective it is.

What's governed and the reach of that governance is a different issue.

Then there's the governance by ballot initiative, especially when it comes to funding almost everything.

Not to mention that they need this extra money to....spend it! Then once they've spent it, where will they get the money for the refunds? This is patch-work at it's finest - and worst.

An aside on an ineffectual California gov't.... It seems to me that Governator Arnold gets all the blame by the people I hear from. I don't get that. Not trying to be an Arnold defender, I'm not real sure I even have an opinion about him, just that I don't see what any governor could do to deal with our legislature. At the Federal level, people can identify and complain about Pelosi or Reid, but at the state level the legislature, especially after term limits, is very anonymous and the governor gets the scorn.

Transparency in California government means the legislators are mostly invisible unless the run afoul of ethics rules or brag about sex on open mics or get caught up an election scandal.

Watch the movie "Election" with Matthew Broderick and Reese Witherspoon. You'll laugh, you'll cry, you'll see where politicians come from.
