Personally, I find when trying to tell people about auto crossing that using the official word Solo is quickly dropped in favor of Auto Crossing ... and I always end up saying it's Time Trials, not Wheel to Wheel type of racing ...

I never call it "Solo 2" when I'm explaining it to friends or trying to recruit people. It's autocrossing. Solo is a trademark that SCCA uses and tries to protect by keeping internal and external references consistent. Just like if you work for Johnson and Johnson, it's a Band-Aid, not an adhesive bandage. Doesn't mean anyone else needs to use the trademarked name in informal conversations. Call it what you want, unless you're pointing people to the SCCA Web site for info, where they'll need to know what they call it.

my european coworkers were trying to figure out what I was talking about years ago when I was talking about autocrossing, then they said "oh, slaloming".

I usually just say "obstacle course in a parking lot full of cones" when explaining to someone why I get up @ 5am on weekends & why they should also get up @ 5am and join me.

Yep, slaloming was what it was called when I started in '72. Didn't become Solo2 here until we became the SCCA Solo2 Committee in 1985. Don't really remember when I first heard the term autocross. Maybe we should drop both Solo and autocross and go back to slaloming! The courses really do resemble a ski course, huh Bill? Alternating back and forth between gates and sweeping turns.

Autocross is certainly the more common term and used in car magazines most often. Doesn't really matter to an outsider, you're going to have to explain it no matter what you call it.

Here is a telling story: I was sitting around with some of my Road Race buddies up at Thunderhill last year one of them asks me, � What�s the difference between Autocrossing and Solo?�.

Right there was his first mistake... If he was talking with SCCA buddies they would have been Club Racing buddies. What is this road race he is speaking of? Must be a NASA term.
