are still pretty cheap. People whine about the costs as the level of competition has pushed the average prep level closer to the edge, but still my car won as much on the revalved sports as it did on the $1000 SPSS3's and it hasn't won anything on the nearly $4000 2812's. Yeah a couple of guys have Moton's in those classes. A couple of guys have $1500 headers. A few are willing to turn 8K+ rpm risking motors. A few have multiple sets of uber expensive rims. But if you go through the trophies at Nationals, you could still get wood from a $5-$6K ST/STS car. Its still possible with judicious budgeting and lots of work and immense amounts of driving skill. Is it really that bad.
I throw way more money at my car than I should or I need to. But hey, I'm compensating....
The only thing I can see is a single combined class for the cheaper low powered econo boxes on street tires. Combining like HS and GS (doesn't help Kurt). Theory being the heavier and better powered GS, give up that advantage over the underpowered lightweight HS cars. Maybe ES, but I think the MR2's would kill. I don't think you'd want any AWD cars in there. We have too many classes now. And forget indexing a class, not going to happen outside of Pro Solo.
I don't think this is doable, but that's the approach I'd be brainstorming. Some way to make a single cheap class. Promote it as a stepping stone class. Or a Junior ST with 6" rim max and stock engine rules, but bars and springs. Single adjustable shocks/struts only. Stock seats. No wings. The wheel width helps even the street tired playing field so the DS mini's can be included. Play out ideals like this that work towards allowing truly streetable, truly smogable, trully cheap cars to compete at a national level.
And @Jeff Mega zoomie Struts are all the rage.... Even more expensive than the shocks.
