Cal Club Time Trials

Cal Club has started offering Time Trial events in So Cal. I just attended the first one at Buttonwillow on March 13,14 and I have to tell you it was a great event that was a lot of fun, fast and educational.

This was their first event so the crowd was not large, but we had people who had never been on a track or any kind of autosports before all the way up to track junkies like me.

The focus was on safety and training and education of car control and track and line knowledge. We actually walked part of the track. Yeah, me the guy with the bad knee.
It was very helpful to learn the camber on some corners and walk the curbing for turn in and exit and apex and even for run off (only once), if you needed to.
They are going to run another event at Auto Club Speedway in June and I would hope that some of you in the autocross arena would give this a try.

We did 3, 20 minute sessions each day. One orientation as we drove a different configuration each day, one practice and then one timed laps if you wanted to session.

I was lucky enough to get a little coaching by Oli and by the end of the day he had me running a 2:13 on 1ccw when the race leaders were running 2:09. Not bad for a 3700 lb street car.

Renee and Gayle and Bob and all the regular volunteers were there and it was great to see them.

random, but where are rules posted or is it based on solo 2 rules? i would need a rollbar i assume?

I think they may still be in development of the details on rules.

There were several cars there without a roll bar, even a brand new camaro with a super charger.

They were glad to see a roll bar on my car though, but I do not think it was required.

It will likely be posted on the cal club site soon.

Yes, beginners are very welcome. They had several, the instructor rode with them all day and they really enjoyed it.

Do they just run the Level 1 time trials or do they have the Level 2 Club Trials as well where the cars are classed?

Since this was the first event in a long time, they did not have enough cars to run a class. We all went out in one group.

I think they would like to build it up to the point that there are enough cars to class them and have some serious competiton.

I had a great time I know. I worked on my technique and track knowledge and I gained about 3 seconds a lap on my previous best, ran within just less than 4 seconds of the T1 lap record.

I am a happy camper.

FYI Yes, rollbars are required in lieu of the factory roll hoops as provided. However if you can get a hardtop apparently that meets the rules as well (my Miata has an optional hardtop I could get that would make it legal if I didn't want a rollbar installed).

That is correct, it would be great to have a larger field and some serious competiton for this event.

I need to get a decent job so I can fix my Pro7 car. Anyone know where to get a cheap steering column/steering box for an 83 RX7? Other than extending the exhaust over the axle(so I don't melt Watts Link bushings again), all it needs in the steering box.
