Hey there everyone,

Had a bit of a snag this evening while working on the car that will take longer than the weekend to repair. Had a caliper seize to the slider pin on the left rear (e-brake, etc etc) and I won't likely get it fixed until after the event. :shock:

I'm open to any class at this point, but would prefer SK2 if possible. Figure running is more fun than not running. :ibrightdea:

FWIW I have 15x6" SSR Competitions with brand new and scrubbed 195/50 RE11s to offer for the weekend. Bolt pattern is 4x100.

You can drive the Cougar if you want, but I'd understand if you didn't want to :-p.

Dan. You can run the ST civic in any other class if you want. Just bring the wheels and tires :thumbup:

Also i notice you are in the TB practice. You can run the practice in the car as well. You'll probably need it to do well on Sunday. The car can be a handful. :mrgreen:

Jon, make the same deal that you were offered by G. D., $100 a run. That was for 4 runs in SD.

Drive our Miata to the event on Saturday ... perhaps I can get Karen to let you race it on Sunday in STR ... but on Saturday perhaps you can do some runs in it plus some rides with some other car? Michael Henderson is also looking for someone to drive his new old 1990 (?) 911 to the event on Saturday. Michael also lives in South Pas

I had that happen back in December to my '04. Took it to a mechanic who refused to acknowledge that I had a problem (it wasn't completely seized yet) - when I finally convinced him to look at it he recommended I get new calipers for both rear sides. I then took it to my usual mechanic and they used a hammer to knock that #@!#$% pin out. Took two guys and quite a bit of hammering to do it, but they got it to work and I'm still on the same caliper.

I'd offer my car, but after last weekend where I had serious chunking issues on one tire with two drivers, I don't think it'd be a good idea.

You're still running the same caliper? :shock: I tried hammering on mine and it just made the pin more loose in the mounting bracket bore. Not so sure i'd like the thought of running on it even if I could get it out and lube it up again. Pin might be bent/bracket trashed. Just glad to be driving a Mazda (parts wise), but I do find it dumb they didn't have some kind of passthrough for it. Just something to get an allen key to turn it in this kind of situation, yano? :ibrightdea: To be honest I wouldn't have known about it unless my tire guy hadn't commented that my brakes looked low on the inside. Took the right side off and it had plenty of pad, then found the left side was buggered. I haven't had to remove them in the lsat 4 years or so, suppose this is what I get. :P Note to self: lube pins more often.

If you want to try to fix it by the weekend...

A rear left caliper would be $81.40 + a $65.00 core charge. We could ship it directly to you and you would get it the next day. These are Centric rebuilt calipers. Also, I know the Mazdaspeed program will not refund the core charge, but we can if you send us your old caliper (or say give it to us this weekend).

Just an option :)

Thanks very much for the heads up, Nicole!

Part of the problem is the slider pin is bolted to the retaining bracket, and the slider pin is seized inside the bore the slider pin rides in which is why I have to replace the caliper as well. The pin is in an encapsulated bore with no rear opening to use any sort of tool to punch it out. in hindsight I probably could just hammer the snot out of the caliper mounted on the car to get it off the pin but I figure I'm going to warp or break something in the process...not good on brakes. I'd rather not skimp on safety.

I actually ordered it last night, and parts usually arrive the day after I place the order since it's local which would mean friday/saturday. I also had some other parts (rear wheel bearings) that should be arriving today so even still this may be for the best and I can take my time doing repairs.

Jon, sounds good. Just a FyI but if you weren't planning on attending the practice I'd be glad to just drive on sunday and save you an extra trip up here. I appreciate the favor but would like to save you as much trouble as possible. I'd also be glad to play tire warmer on Sunday. :)

Hi Dan,

I know you just ordered, but here's the trick for future reference:
You're on the Mazdaspeed program, right? Order the complete, remanufactured caliper from Mazda. For your car, the part number for a complete, padless caliper (which includes the mounting bracket) would be something like NAY5-26-98ZR-T0. Even though the part number you order is "called" a reman, a lot of the time I get sent a brand-new caliper anyway.

Why those fail: that's a rubber bushing in there... it's done to reduce brake noise. Rust is the most common enemy, but I've seen trackday guys get their brakes so hot it actually softens/melts that bushing to where it bonds the caliper and bracket together. I've taken a couple of those and machined them to accept a metal bushing, but that's overkill (and not stock legal) in your case.

aaaah, gotcha. Makes sense...Good to know. :) Have you had any luck drilling an access hole in the caliper to use an allen key to turn the pin? The pins are machined with a 3/4mm allen key head on them to install them on the rear retaining bracket. I thought of just drilling a hole in the backside but I didn't know if that would create problems/would need to be plugged.

Just called them up to change the order, seems the part number I was given is what superceeds that one (they found the left side p/n, the one there I guess is for the right side). ::shrug:: They were saying Mazda doesn't make remans anymore. Thanks for the heads up though!

If you use the Cougar, you can just use my tires free of charge, all you have to do is let me do a double entry on your practice spot (14th on the waiting list... not looking good...)

Dan, I am the course designer for this weekend. I will be there from Friday to Sunday. Its not a trouble at all. Mike Palero is my co-driver but you are welcome to play in any other ST class (STX, STU, CST, X, PAX ST...etc)

Hello everyone!

I've already messaged a few people I'm linked up with on Facebook but for the record:

I'm passing on this weekend. Please give my spot to someone who needs it for the practice. I've registered for the champ and if I can pull something off I'll do my best so I can at least score points but I'm generally resigned that I need to take time and fix the car right rather than rush it. I've had a heavy amount of roadblocks trying to get things together and I think that something is saying I need to skip this event.

Thank you to everyone for jumping in to lend a hand so quickly!! I was amazed that so many people came forward, and I really really appreciate it. :) :gpower: Looking forward to the event at the end of the month!
