Gary Thomason in Road and Track!

Post by James Yom »

Fast driver + supercars (minus the Evo :P ) + El Toro ProSolo course = good read.

I think it was awesome that Road and Track included an autox section instead of just laptimes at a track. Even better that it's with one of the best drivers and on a course that a lot of us have had the opportunity to run.

so the real question is when is Gary going to show up with a new SS car now that he's tested all the 'front runners'?

The BMW M3 Coupe (42.74 sec.) felt so incredibly responsive and controllable, we're a little puzzled that it didn't finish higher. "The steering is absolutely wonderful," said Gary, "though the front tires are a little small, and if you get in too hot and try to turn the wheel, it's going to get into a pretty good plow." A spinning inside rear tire hurt corner exit speeds a little, and at times the V-8 could be a little too eager: "I had to make sure that the Power button was off, because the throttle's way too responsive with it on." Another bright spot? "Unlike the Lotus, it trail-brakes beautifully."

I'm not that puzzled. It weighs a bit much, more than the previous gen (E46) but not surprised about the steering. In response from die-hard grocery-getter owners, they all wanted the crisper feeling of the E30/E36 M3 and so after the E46 was too removed, the E92 got it back.

I hate that BMW always puts this skinny as "anorexic" tires on the fronts. Plowing? Typical for the M3. V-8 eager? Similar to the inline-6 but more toned down the E46.

Brakes? BMW masters this area always.

Great job Gary. So when is the Gallardo going to show up in SS? Or is it NOC, thus put into ASP?

Good article, there is a Video section as well that was pretty cool. I still dig the Audi, but the Lambo looked pretty good!!

Wow, after the Gallardo the most striking thing in this photo is the pink on that house down the street

Bill, you will be glad to know I smiled for quite awhile after reading your photoshop comment, but not as much as I did when Huffman and I whipped you guys in PAX at the last Fontana event after hearing that Huffman got no props after winning the San Diego PAX year end award last year 8-)

I thought the Gallardo was by far the coolest car I drove that day, running right with the full-on race car ACR. The Lambo is a true street car - the ACR was far from it.

I wonder how the Noble and a 430 would have faired in that mix.

I can attest Gary, as a doctor friend of mine has a yellow one and has let me drive it and it is the equivalent of automotive Nirvana. Very smooth car.
