CA Speedway Time Trials ...

Post by Mako Koiwai »

Day One:

Our CSCC drivers kicked butt ... taking three of the four top spots in Saturday's Time Trails. A race prepped C4 was I believe 2nd ... Pete L ... took top honors. KJ was third ... after taking off his rear wing and there by gaining 8 mph going into Nascar One banked corner. Karen was fourth ... taking 6 seconds off of her Instructors top time!

Guess who's Faster? A CSCC Auto Crosser in a NB MIata, or a (poorly driven) GT40 (on street tires)?!

Nothing like track events. Can't wait for my events in the summer. It's getting harder to have enough budget for both AutoX and Track days ;)

Anyways, the rest of us CSCC folks went down to have fun with the San Diego folks yesterday, fun was had by all.

Always a lot of fun to run in San Diego, next best thing to a track event because the courses are always fast 8-). The Fiat ran well, in the 51 second range, couldn't get any lower because of the open rear end :barf:, but still a lot of fun :o ! There are a few more from this event on my YouTube site. :computer:

Yup. I got greedy after that silver vette let me by, open track at that point. The silver vette then broke a rear half shaft 2 turns after my pass.

In post analysis, my tires were not as grippy that third and final session due to excessive OPR.
Had a power exit rear come around issue. Luckily in a perfect spot with no traffic. Whew....

Just got done scraping those tires.... A full large size dust pan's worth of OPR.

Overall, a great experience. I elected for only one of the two days.

KJ, myself, and two other corvettes could of used our own run group.
The third and last session on sat. KJ nor I got a non-traffic/issue(spin) lap on the time sheet.
Lots of slowWW cars that we kept catching up to. 18 total.

Never thought I would be passing the replica GT40 going into the day. Passed him each session.

What tires did you guys use?

Yeah I don't think AutoX wings and spoilers are a good idea for top speed :-)

Don't get fooled by OPR after a track session... Most of the time this pickup occurs during the cool down lap. If you are getting OPR during the session you are doing one of two things wrong: you are driving off line, or you are driving to slow to burn it off.

A6 Hoosiers about 30%- 40% tread left.

In the hottest session of the day, they got a little greasy on corner exit a few times. Once enough to spin ever so slowly, luckily without anyone around and lots of hard surface too.

Next time, I'll check them out between session more closely.

what do you mean? these wings and spoilers arent supposed to be effective at solo speeds

apparently KJ's wing works too well at a real track environment

Karen worked her way down from 2:22 to 2:12.X ... only 1.5 seconds off of Philip R's time in her Miata. He reeled off three 2:11's doing Instruction runs with her. Karen's best top speed going into Nascar 1 ... the first big banked corner was 104 mph ... 20 mph slower then KJ's RX8 ...

Spec Miata lap record is about 2 flat

KJ's "new" exhaust cracked ... I believe causing the end pipe to shift, leading to a melt down:

That certainly looks like fun. Hopefully I will join you guys in a future event.

Just curious, was there any obstacles just before NASCAR 1 to slow down the cars? I've seen other organizations do it, just not sure if SCCA would do it too for the time trial group. Anyway, I wanted to go with my 335i because I wanted to see if the Dunlop tires alone will improve my lap time (and hopefully matching my S4 time). I did a 2:01.9xx in the 335i on stock Michelin RFTs, and a 1:59.0xx in the S4 on stock Dunlops last November. :D
