Solo School 2010?

I vaugely remember seeing a solo school taught by Cal Club either late last year or early this year? I wasn't able to partake in San Diego, and Evo doesn't appear to have anything here until next year, so I was wondering if we were going to do something? Anyone heard any rumors on this happening?

I am scottish by heritage, if I wear a kilt think they will let me in the Thanksgiving school. I have heard ours is a more friendly environ than San Diego but don't know if that is true or not. I won't have time for the Oct 30th as I will be in Chicago attending classes at UoC.

Ladies School ... and then there's the small matter that YOU have to provide a Guy, or in this case a Gal, to work for you. Your helper then gets to do a run or two at the end of the day to see if they can beat you. Loser buys dinner ... the Guys never seem to win, ie. the Gals control Timing. ;)

Nahh... I have been yelled at equally in both regions.

Truth is, some clubs are more friendlier than other clubs, regardless of region. And one club in San Diego, well never assume malice when pure stupidity will suffice. Not naming the club. But I can see how that reputation can happen.

My problem with that are two fold, first I leave for Chicago on the 31st of October, so the wife wouldn't be happy my going to driving school on the 30th, I know I have already floated the idea. Secondly I hear Lisa Severy teaches at the winter school, although I didn't know it was women only, and her advice has been a profound help. Would like a chance to take some lessons from her, Rita and Tom. All experienced C4 drivers. They are more than qualified to critique me, and the car. Found during the last two practices I never got around to asking them for some ride alongs, my fault, but by the time I had a baseline, they were tied up.

Hey Art - and anyone else interested in an OPEN school -

You need to let your club representatives and the leaders of the Cal Club Solo (Mike Simanyi, KJ Christopher, Max Hayter) organization that you are interested in attending an open school. I am always willing to organize the school. You just need to make it known so that club management gets a sense of the level of interest.

I think we should have an open school every year. My understanding is the challenge is getting a date and a site such that there is no interference with the regular practice/championship schedule. We apparently can not get extra dates at either venue due to competition for the sites. It is also my understanding that, for various reasons, Club management prefers that a school can be held after the Solo Nationals are over. Mike and I exchanged e-mails earlier this year about the possibility of having an open school, but for whatever reason (both of us are busy), we never pursued it to a decision. I'm guessing we've missed the window of opportunity for this year. Mike Simanyi can probably add more details.

There may also be some concerns that the open school does not "pay" for itself. I think last year's school did break even at least. Perhaps KJ can confirm that we didn't lose any money. We really try to hold the cost down and make the school a good value based on what is provided.

I personally think that June is a good month for an open school because the weather is usually not too hot yet and w/Daylight Savings allows more time to run. I prefer El Toro as a site, because both exercises (skid pad, slalom, etc.) as well as the course can be set up and maintained concurrently. Last year the school was in October, as I recall. The school was on Saturday and we had a practice on Sunday for both students and instructors. Mike had suggested a one-day school on a Saturday, in conjunction with a Championship. It is really tough to stick everything in one day especially if we have to convert the exercises into a course. Some students commented in the surveys that they would have liked more practice on the individual exercises.

Again, if anyone is interested in participating in an open school, the only way this will happen is if we make it a priority to get one on the calendar and support it. It will only be made a priority if there is a clear need, that there is a significant interest/ significant number of interested participants and supporters to help make it happen. Just let you club reps and club leaders know. Although it it probably too late for this year, it would not be too early to start planning for next year!
