At the top right you can see where we did our litmus test of M #7 Glaze to see how bad the oxidation was.

Of course the first to volunteer to detail was a BMW CCA member =) =) =)

1 Pass on a DA (dual action polisher) made a dramatic difference

I did get Bob to start buffing, but I really started to wonder about his working pattern





As usual, I had a wonderful time chatting with the regulars and meeting more CarCrazy folks. I'm pretty sad this is the last TNOG I'll be able to attend for 2010, as I start university classes this coming Thursday. TNOG will be shifting into park pretty soon and I believe will only start back up once daylight savings time switches again on Feb 20 =( In the meantime, I'll try to get by by compounding and waxing test panels.

In these pictures you will see Bob. I invited a racing buddy of mine, Bob, to TNOG so I could prove to him I could resurrect his paint. It turned out pretty well with old standby M80! It was nice I didn't have to do any real work to the truck-- I tricked him by telling him I was "teaching him how to use the G110v2." It worked out well for Bob... and my back.

What can you tell me about the equipment and compounds for "SEVERE" oxidation. Might try hitting the roof of the Metrosexual Civie. But I'm not sure there is really any paint left up there... :(

Oh yeah... And how do you manage to not to spray compound everywhere when you start... If there is a trick... Please teach it to the STL/STXL driver in my car.

What kind of paint is your Tahitian Green? Is it just oxidizing? Or is the clearcoat failing?
For the most part, I've been hitting everything with clearcoat with Ultimate Compound and a G110v2 on a DA.
For single stage stuff, I like M80 (Meguiar's #80) as it has alot of oil in it for nurishing the paint. Any pictures of your roof?

What kind of equipment & pads are you using, and what is your technique?
I don't splatter when using a DA (dual action polisher). Place the product on the pad, place it flat on the car, turn it on, and quickly spread it to a 2x2' area before starting your cut.

I only make a mess when I'm using a rotary with a wool pad. Splatter with a rotary is pretty much unavoidable-- all you can do is do you best to minimize it and reduce cleanup mess by covering the car.

I was under the impression that anything pre 1995 is not clearcoated. Anybody know?

My '88 M3 definitely had a clear coat.

You really can't say everything before 1995 is single stage... My 1989 Audi 90 was. Single stage red, while my Audi 200 from the same year is a clear coated white.

I have no idea on single stage or clear coat. :oops:

And I try SOOO hard to avoid taking pics of the roof. ;)

This one shows a little bit. Rear bumper cover is hashed too. But I guess in 2011 we go with Orange party Saran Wrap.

Saw this on a Honda forum. Seems like a good idea to me.

"Try a paint cleaner on a the door frame or other hidden spot, and if you have paint color on the applicator no clear and if no paint color is transferred then clear coat."

There doesn't seem to be a clear cut answer about when/if clear coat. Apparently the application differs widely by manufacturer and paint type, i.e. solid vs metallic.

If your roof is clearcoated, I'm hoping your roof is just oxidized and not failed.

Everyone I ask gives me the same answer: "once clear coat failure starts, the only way to fix it is to repaint the panel"

My car is closer to the top pic... But somewhere in between the two.... :(

Time for the carbon fiber roof wrap? ;) Then new saran wrap bumper covers and I'm home. Sides, hatch, and hood look decent.

If your car is colored Tahitian Green Pearl and is paint code BG-28P, it looks like its clearcoated.

The instructor, Mike Stoops, is a funny guy and was able to answer all the questions I had for him.
