garage epoxy coating

Post by Jeff Shyu »

6 years after being in my house, i'm finally getting around to finishing out the floor of the garage *soon*.

what's the best (value - i'm sure there's some $$$$$/sf solution that's cool if you have an unlimited budget, but that's not for me  )epoxy sealer you guys have either used, or know someone who has used it?

I used the Home Depot one with the sprinkles. I have had some epoxy peel up where hot tires sit on it, but I probably did not spend quite enough time prepping. Overall, I have been very happy and will probably will do it with the same thing in a few years. I think it was around $250 for the kit.

Ditto what Max said.

Prep is critical. The better you clean the floor, the less hot tire peel you'll have.

alternatively, it seems like it's ~300 bucks for a single car coverage of floor tile.

opinions?

This is the one I was considering: http://ucoatit.com/pgs/main.htm" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; Read through the application instructions, gives a lot of info on the importance of prep.

I helped Karl Asseily do this at his place. We used some floor epoxy from Home Depot, I think it was Rust-Oleum brand. We scrubbed the floor like crazy, acid cleaned it with muriatic acid... and proceeded to *seriously* frustrate ourselves applying the epoxy. There was something odd about it. The stuff would roll out with the first pass of the roller, then when you went back over it again to spread it thinner it would pick right up onto the roller again.

We had to lay the stuff out stupid-thick, without passing over it after the first roll. Yield wasn't so great that way...

I don't know if they still carry it, but Griot's Garage used to sell some garage epoxy. They charge a bit of a premium, but I'm willing to bet Gio's next paycheck that it won't have any funky qualities like the stuff we used from Home Depot.

I used the industrial version of Aervoe's floor epoxy. It went on real easy after the prep( like mike explained) but I didn't have any problems with lift when rolling it out. 1kit (2gallons) did 1coat on the floor of a 2car garage. I used 2kits and the floor turned out great. Then Irish stopped by and help me install Stainless Steel flashing around the base of the walls. Looks sweet.

hmm.. i'm actually thinking high traffic VCT now. The cost is low, and it's easy to replace tiles if need be. I won't have cars with tires that will rip up the tiles like you guys, so I'm not really worried about that. pretty sure i don't have moisture problem, but I DO have a garage door seal problem.. :(

so many things to do.. >_<

I used the U-coat it product linked above. I bought a kit that had a two-tone color concept. The two tone didn't turn out nearly as good as the pictures, but it's not that bad. I only had a day to do it, to allow dry time before we had to put the garage into use proceeding our move. I probably didn't clean the floor as good as I should have. I also never applied (been there 6.5 yrs now) the clear coat, because I still haven't finished unpacking the vast majority of my tools / toys. To access 1/2 of the garage.

I have a few tire marks, in a few different locations, where stacks of tires that sat for months at a time made round rings in the painted surface that I can't remove, but the paint has never pealed. I'm guessing the clear coat would have solved that problem.
