I've tried both GoPro backs (with the standard case) and they both leave a lot to be desired in terms of audio. I have my iPhone and GoPro beside each other inside the windshield and the GoPro audio is almost inaudible compared to what my iPhone captures. When I do the picture in picture in iMovie, I just extract the audio from the GoPro and delete it, leaving the iPhone audio. The difficult part is syncing them in iMovie, which I manage by clapping loudly before the run starts, so I can use the audio cues to line them up.
If you really want better audio, you're probably not going to get it with a GoPro unless they have some sort of external microphone. I don't think they do though.
This is my last run last year at the tour using the watertight case. Not perfect audio by any means, but acceptable I think. I really just want to hear the engine. But it was cool with the open case to hear the announcer at the end of the run each lap.

I was wondering if that was some sort of pre-run psych-up ritual.

Oversteer is better than understeer because you don't see the tree you're hitting.

Yeah, some people do that, I figured I would fit right in.
That's why the first frame of all my videos has my hands clapping ;)
I would try the "Open" back with Sponge inserts. I couldn't re-find the demo video on GoPro's Facebook page, but mounted on a motorcycle there was a nice difference between no sponges and wind noise and sponges and engine noise.
I found it funny to see this car lined up in the stx grid.

I know that for many of you, the San Diego National Tour from two weeks ago is a long lost memory. However, I have posted a bunch of photos from both Saturday and Sunday’s competition at http://www.lateapexphoto.com. Sorry for being so late but sometimes, life just gets in the way of processing photos. It is obvious that folks were trying very hard judging by the number of three wheel and even the occasional two wheel cornering efforts. There are even a couple of folks that must have been using some very aggressive brake pads evidenced by the sparks flying off both front wheels. So enjoy the shots.
As a welcome special, place an order before April 26, 2011 and get 25% off the total item cost on all orders. There is no minimum order size required to take advantage of this offer, but custom hard cover books are excluded. Just enter coupon code "Welcome 2011" for the discount.
