Gopher snake I think, but related to the Bull.

We had that exact same snake in our front yard. I thought it was a rattler due the thickness, until we saw the tail. Neighbor kids had to touch it.

I've seen a Mojave Green 3 times already this year. 1 Sidewinder and 1 Red Racer. All by my house. None at work so far, but the drivers have killed a couple. They see a snake and somehow they get so frightened by it, that it might jump thru the closed window and bite them, that they forget to avoid them.

From personal experience, not internet:

Mojave's are more aggressive than other snakes. When startled (both of us actually) I've had one head straight for me and track me. No other snake has ever done that. But they don't stalk you like raptors in Jurassic Park or anything.

Gopher snakes are the natural enemy of sidewinders. That's good enough for me.

Dogs and antivenom? People antivenom can be used on dogs ($$$$). Perhaps you're thinking of rattlesnake vaccine for dogs. Mine has had three shots of it plus snake aversion training (featuring real Mojave's). Vaccine will help with sidewinder bites, but not mojave's.

Mojave deaths are uncommon? I've heard that too. But amputations and serious mutilations are more common. BTW, 90% of rattlesnake bites are inflicted on people knowing the snake was there and handling or messing with them.

The way you identify a Mojave is to look for a coon-tail. A few inches of black and white concentric stripes immediately in front of the rattles. There are other coon-tailed rattlers, but supposedly not in the West. The recommended way to deal with any rattlesnake intruder if you must is to use a long-handled push-broom. I'll be comfortable with that when they make brooms with 10-ft handles.

A couple of years ago my brother-in-law stepped out of his back door right on to a baby rattler, which apparently pissed the snake off. After the B-I-L got bit several times, his foot, his jaw, as well a other areas of his body swelled up, he began feeling nausious, all within minutes. My sister-in-law took him to the Auburn, CA hospital, where they gave him antivenin. Turns out he was both lucky and unlucky. On the lucky side, this particular hospital is renowned for it's ability to treat venemous bites and had on hand just what he needed. The unlucky part is that baby rattlers, unlike adults, will strike over and over, whereas the big guys only hit once. So, if bitten by a baby there's a good chance you'll actually get more venom.

B-I-L symtoms lasted several weeks in varying degrees.

The snake went to snake heaven via the sectioning by shovel method.
