part of the physical keyboard usability is also dependent upon the layout.

a lot of the models with a keyboard has them laid out in a square grid, with the letters arranged like a keyboard. I can't use those.
my tmobile G2 has a physical keyboard, and the keys are slightly shifted just like they are on a real keyboard, and I can get about 40 words per minute typing on that, without looking at the keys.

Bill is an old fart like me. Forty words per minute on our phones is not even close to our reality.

Done deal. Went down to the Verizon store and diddled with all the display models. Bought the Thunderbolt. Salesman (yeah, right) says Ridgecrest is due for G4 in 18 months. We'll see.

did you just link an iPhone 5 ad, as reasons why you shouldn't get an android?

in all seriousness though, cost, open platform, etc aside, name one thing that the iphone has/does, that a droid phone can't.

Really? No offense, but is their a geekier crowd than Apple fanboys?
The second one is just stupid, it applies to such a minute percentage of ANY product, including iPhone users.
They got the last one partially correct. I refuse to pay AT&T's or even Verizon's plan rates. Why pay over $100 per month, when one non- iPhone provider offers Unlimited everything for $79 a month.

I do find that many (not all) iPhone users are product snobs. One of them wrote the linked article.

I pay about $80 a month (including all the taxes and crap) for my iPhone plan that includes roll over minutes and data.

I was. Facetime only works over wireless.

Actually, Facetime is pretty cool., but only if your friends/family have Iphone/Pad/Touch. Skype is available for any computer any thus everyone in my family can do it. Since we are spread all over the world, this is very useful. Mind you, I only just got video Skype working on my phone - video conferencing had been kind of lacking on the Android platform.

I switched from Iphone to Android a year ago and have thoroughly enjoyed to the ability to customize my phone the way I like it. Ditto on my Android Tablet!

For my family, I advise buying the Iphone/Ipad2 since they are completely computer illiterate.

Geeks are the only folks who actually belong on an Android phone, as they place its packability and tinker-toy qualities (which they’ll dogmatically refer to as “openness” without any ability to explain what they even mean by that) over the practicality and mainstream suitability of the iPhone 5. But if you’re among the ninety-nine percent of the population who aren’t geeks, don’t let geek dogma prevent you from getting the phone you want. it means that while the phone works fine as it comes out of the box, I have the option to tailor it to how I actually WANT it to look/behave, rather than it doing only what apple says it's allowed to do.

if by "practicality and mainstream suitability", you mean a self fulfilling statement qualified by the number of users who do not otherwise know any better, or do not have the wish to customize their equipment, then yes, the android certainly does not compete with the iphone's ability to be completely vanilla and zombielike.

the phone I want, isn't available. I want the hardware of a polished iphone, but the software freedom of a droid. when faced with the choice, I choose flexibility over shiny.

aaron does skew the scale to my disadvantage though.

mako.. I'd happily take a iphone, or an ipad, or and imac, or really, ANY of the apple product. I don't dispute how polished their products is, and they certainly do what they're designed to do well, if you are happy operating within the limits assigned to you by Steve Jobs.

I just think there's better, and cheaper way to go about it.. you forgo a little bit of bling, for a fair $ saving, and a lot more flexibility.

for someone who has no intention of playing around with their gadget, Apple makes the perfect product.
