And one of the runs had to be fixed at the event. So, originally 4 of the 6 were wrong. Ouch. Not blaming or complaining, but.... In at least two of my runs, I think the issue isn't with the trailer but the course workers. Second time now at the SD Tour I've been given a DNF at the finish. First time was for center punching the last slalom cone. Radio operator didn't think it was fair I was so far offline so he considered it a DNF. Yes, really. This event I re-entered the course after a spin two cones back of where I left the course because it was the fastest and easiest way back. Don't really care, just wish we could get some more consistent course work at a national event. Some day it might matter.
I don't have complete knowledge of what happened with the computers. Only that they went down, they couldn't get them up and they had to manually enter a lot of times for the second group...maybe all third runs and some second runs. They were also manually entering times for all of the third group and maybe some of the fourth. This caused a few errors and slowed down results big time.
As a result of this, ST was released from impound before results were out. I think that's the way most competitors want it (instead of being stuck in impound forever), but it's not really up to them anyways, it's up to impound, and we do need to clear the grid for the next group. Really, if there's no protests, then there's no reason we have to keep the cars in impound. Results do usually come quick enough that we might as well keep the cars in impound as it's way easier for the competitors to look at them together, plus that's usually a cool thing for the winners and stuff.
On-top of this, there were several issues with cone calls and course work. I was out on course for part of your group interviewing workers trying to sort some stuff out (not your problem specifically, but Will's prob and a few others). This combined with the above greatly complicated your guys results.
I was aware of there possibly being other timing issues with ST but was also told that the competitors were OK with those issues since they didn't affect the results. Perhaps this was incorrect? I was not directly told by a competitor about any other issues.
We always do what we can but it is also up to the competitors (not placing blame on any of you guys, but the following is good for everyone to know) so keep in mind the following...
- The sweep that proceeds your runs will place radio and course logs in the trailer. If you want to be extra sure that your results for that run are correct go look in the posting trailer. Trusting the announcer or finish slip guy...no bueno.
- If the logs are incorrect and you are still running, inform grid. They will tell timing and/or an Op Steward and we'll try and get it resolved asap so you know before your next run. Also keep in mind rule 7.8 if there's posting problems.
- After the heat is done, impound is in charge so issues should be brought up with them and/or and Op Steward.
- When the last set of Prelim results come out, you have 30 minutes to dispute them. As mentioned above, ideally this happens when you're still in impound which keeps things much simpler.
There are always a few (yes, there were more than that this weekend) cone and timing issues. Almost always they're easy to sort out, so even if they don't affect the results but you don't want them on the results, just let the appropriate party know.
Oh, and in regards to center-punching a slalom cone. That's not the course workers decision (if by, "radio operator" you mean the one at the corner station), the Chief Steward should make that call. Don't ask me about missing slalom cones at Nationals...what is it with you ST guys
And FWIW, I saw you re-enter before the spot you went off so had I been aware that it was marked as a DNF if would've been a quick fix.
Your Friendly Op Steward
