Very sad people choose to drive at speeds necessary to cause that much damage on public roads, and the aftermath it brings. Its rather freaky watching the hazards blinking, especially the bulb on the ground in the rubble where the drivers door would be, but the tail lights are not lit. Were they running with their lights off , and just hazards on?

Crazy. Not much damage to the rest of the car...all the energy of the impact must have been concentrated on the driver's door. He musta been seriously f'd up.

Sad ending to what probably started out to be a nice day. The drivers were stupid.

I have made it a habit to leave loved ones with a hug and an "I love you." We never know when the end will come. :(

Horrible... The gf and I saw it last night on the news.

Young wealthy guy + very little performance driving experience (?), (or common sense for that matter) + Extremely powerful sports car with a crash safety rating comparable to an empty Coke can = Very bad things.

I hope at least the girlfriend pulls though.

Police have not determined how fast the Ferrari was traveling, but the car is capable of speeds over 200 miles per hour.
where do they find their car facts? modena doing over 200? 100mph tailwind down a 20% grade?

Only street legal car that can reach that speed is a Bugatti Veyron. :)

Was confused when I saw the episode Top Gear with Bugatti. Apparently it was the only one that broke 250, not 200. Thanks Kurt.

The Modena does 186 which I still think is optimistic.

Yeah, that thing is badass. Apparently the crazy thing is how stable it is at high speed.

But it takes a little more time to get to 250, once it reaches 215-220. At that point wind becomes even harder to push through hence the necessary EXTRA power it needs to go 30mph faster.

Agreed. Some of these numbers are a bit suspect and perhaps "theoretical", or very little wind or assuming there's a bit of downhill slope.

Sure it's a Modena? CF brakes says it's a 430, maybe Scuderia. TV people have a hard time with anything beyond the color of the car, with a few exceptions. There's a guy at ABC who knows his stuff.

The most annoying thing to me was the KTLA reporter saying about the female passenger that "miraculously she's in stable condition." Dead people are in stable condition. It's meaningless. She could be stable, but in a coma. That wouldn't qualify as miracle.

There is no evidence he was street racing. Poor guy was minding his own business when a drunk driver in a German-made vehicle side-swiped him. :(

That may have been the case, but it's still an ongoing investigation. Going the posted speed limit isn't going to split a Ferrari in half, in cases like these speed is always a factor.

Will, at 50mph the Ferrari would not have split like that. 90-100 mph is more likely given that the elasticity of the frame material failed completely. The Ferrari's ECU might have an actual speed recorded.

Apparently there was a cop watching the whole thing starting with when the cars begun to spin. There'll be plenty of evidence, whatever the outcome.

That's true. Approximate speed can be calculated with the weight of the car and the damage done, but they'll probably just guess.
