Forum feature request

Post by Steve Collins »

For the forum programming masters:

I would find it useful to have a feature on the forum that works just like "active_topics" named search but omits the "political paddock".

I use active_topics ( search.php?search_id=active_topics" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; ) as my home base on solo2, and I don't mind a bit of "off topic" car stuff but find that the political threads are just making me grumpy. I would love to have a way to keep up to date on the car stuff while allowing the Steve, George, et al to enjoy their political rant stuff. I don't think it should to be banned from the board, and even read it sometimes, but I don't want to have to work quite so hard to ignore it.

If we could do that, then perhaps some folks would enjoy a similar button (i.e. named search) that omits all the "off topic" stuff altogether.

steve

ps Perhaps there is already a way to do this with a carefully crafted search url. If so, I couldn't figure it out on my own...

simplest solution is probably just to have a forum that requires membership, and if you're not in it, you won't even know it exists (marshall suggested this in one of the threads)

The simplest solution is not to talk politics on our racing message board. Leave politics to political boards.
If we create a section that no one can see or read except Steve and George, what have we accomplished. A play pen for them?

Will you guys ever stop. The political forum is optional. Why do you click on it if you don't want to be there? And if you click on it accidentally, get out. GEEZ! Could we act like adults here.

i actually read it for some political tidbit that i might have missed in my daily scan.

you may choose not to become a member, but i suspect more than steve and george (and I) would willingly be part of that subforum.

it actually isn't for the people who use the Active Topics and New Threads links to read the board...

Art,
I am not proposing that we cut off or ban the political discussion. That has it's own cost. In my experience, doing that leads to endless discussion about whether topic X or reply Y was appropriate for the board. Folks seem to have been pretty good about keeping their rants in the designated forum. It just seems like an *option* to see the active "car" posts without the (very active) political threads always dominating the top of the list would be nice. I'm sure that lots of folks are fine with things as they are. I'm just asking for an additional type of named search.

Ok steve, I think I fixed that for ya. PP stuff shouldn't show up now unless you specifically go there.

I mentioned the same on the Exec thread, but I would love what Mr. Collins is suggesting.

Aaron, I'll let you drive my Miata if you can figure out a way to do this. If the answer is making Politics a subscriber only forum, then that works too.

It's only slow when compared to a FP BMW or STU STI, but when you compare it to other STS Miata's, it's..... oh wait, wat :unimpressed:

Aaron, I've never used the feature Steve is referring to, but PP no longer shows up when I go to view new posts. Was this intentional?

Yup, what I did there is make you're original reply True. You can now correctly use the argument that you do actually have to click in there if you want to see that stuff.

Aaron,
Thanks for the webmeistery. :computer: Just to be clear, I wasn't proposing to change the default behavior for everyone, just adding an *additional* search option that I could get to via a special url or link. It doesn't seem quite fair for George to lose his with-politics "new posts" link so that I can have my no-politics "active topics" link, but I'll leave the policy decisions to others. I personally think it would be great to have both options available somehow and let the market choose. (Hmmm, I'm not sure if that makes me a liberal, libertarian, conservative or what...)

Thanks Steve, liberal, libertarian, conservative or what doesn't matter.......you're reasonable. That trumps all the other labels. :)

I need clarity here. From what I have gathered from some of these posts, there is/was a feature that would bring up the text of PP with out having to actually select the thread? Is that correct? If this is the case then having PP as a membership only feature is a reasonable solution as long as the new posts would show up in view new posts. But unlike the club forum which are hidden unless one is a member, there would need to be a permanent something on the board index to advise of its' existence. This would be a reasonable solution if the answer to my first question is yes.

Then what to keep George from making Thread title like this "Obama is a Piece of $$$$" and having it come up in the New Topics list?
